Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

MAP Sensor

Post by Kelsey- Michelle » Sun Jul 02, 2023 7:34 pm

Hi guys! I'm new to the forum so hello to all. I recently purchased a 1997 K Series MGF and it's a bit love hate due to an issue with loss of power on acceleration. I'm going through the checklist of likely culprits (already replaced and upgraded throttle body incl. sensor, replaced dizzy cap and rotary arm, fuel filter and HT leads, new plugs on order). I have a new MAP sensor on order and with it being a 1.9 MEMS with the sensor in the ECU I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to access and replace the MAP sensor. I can see how to get the panel off (though haven't tried yet) but have seen some forum threads say it is soldered on. Does anyone have any experience with this and know how to replace it? Thanks in advance!

I think everything in the ECU is potted.
How about tracing the advance/retard vacuum pipe from the head to the ECU and checking for leaks?

Hey, sorry what do you mean by potted? As in irremovable? I've already checked the hose, it's tightly secured and in good condition. We ran a scanner and it came up with the MAP sensor as an error code hence looking to replace.

Set in resin to prevent vibration damage. What scanner did you use? '97 engines were not OBD2 compliant and require T4 or pscan to give accurate codes - and even some of those can be misleading as the fault code systems were still being developed!

Ah I see thanks. Used a snapon modi's edge but to be honest I don't really trust it. I need a specialist really but as I can't drive it anywhere I need one who will come to me!
