Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Early Fog Lamp Switch.

Post by yimpkinwoody » Tue Aug 01, 2023 7:22 pm

Hi all, The rear fog lamp switch has failed on my early MGF. Its MOT time, so I need to replace it. But the early switch is no longer avalable. Part number YUG101830. Last year I managed to find a second hand one, but it soon failed.
Has anyone found an alternative switch or can the later switch be wired in?

I have a TF and know very little about F's esp mk1's but looking on line the switches do not appear to be interchangeable re size, if this is the case I would cobble something together to pass the MOT and keep looking for a SH OE switch.
On the TF the switches carry little current and just initiate the relay so tend to last well, if this applies to your F as well are you sure its the switch and not the relay that's failed.

A s/hand replacement switch cured the problem, and I have been told the later F switch will fit with a bit of fettling.
If someone can tell me which relay operates the fog lamps, I will replace it just in case.

It is easy to repair the old fog lamp switch. I've done this more than one. The problem is that inside the switch there are exposed copper contacts that oxidise over time. A bit of cleaning will restore their function. I sprayed some anticorrosion oil designed for electrical systems that appears to have kept the copper lines from re-oxidising.

I can't now remember whether I have put a "how to" on this forum - it is a little fiddly to get into the switch, but judicious (ab)use of some watch maker's screw drivers usually works for me. (Better tools for this job are, I am sure, available!)

Not a particularly comprehensive description, but it does give an idea on what is involved:
