Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

wiring up TF instrument cluster to check mileage

Post by MGF74 » Fri Jan 05, 2024 5:42 pm

Hello,

I've got an instrument cluster in the basement out of a 2004/05 TF (LHD) that I bought from a breaker's a few years ago. Somebody has expressed interest in it, but I don't know the exact mileage. Several different five-digit numbers are scribbled on the housing that would all make sense, but I don't know for sure.

Which wires of the speedo's harness (which came included when I bought it) would I have to wire up to a car battery for the odometer display to get power so I can verify the mileage?

I've tried looking for diagrams online, but I don't think I've found the right ones. I've got a stock MkI F myself, so I can't just plug it into my car.

I don't know about the MG TF but a friend of mine bought a replacement dash/speedo for his BMW thinking that it would show a lower mileage and when he plugged it in the exact same mileage came up on the new one - so, in that particular case the mileage was stored in the ECU and not in the dash/speedo. Perhaps someone with a testbook or a Pscan can give you a definitive answer?

In case of MG F and TF mileage is stored in the instrument cluster.

Quite right: the instrument cluster on the MGF/TF is relatively "dumb" in this regard!

I'd have to look at the wiring diagrams to see how to power the dash module and specifically the speedo - lots of wiring diagrams on line: should not be too hard to work out :)
