Hood & frame cross compatibility

Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.
Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.
Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway!
Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Hood & frame cross compatibility
Do I understand correctly that you can take the hood and frame off any F or TF and it will fit any other F or TF?
Confirmation would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Re: Hood & frame cross compatibility
Yes, but you can't mix the covers and frames. ie Mk1 cover goes with a Mk1 Frame and a Mk2 cover goes with a Mk2 frame.

Re: Hood & frame cross compatibility
Just to confirm: yes, you can fit any hood frame to any car. I have had Mk2 hood frames on my early Mk1 MGF for around 20 years...

Re: Hood & frame cross compatibility
Ive got a free Mk2 / TF frame if you want it to fit a new hood to it.
It will end up being repurposed as a barbecue cover with the remnant of the old hood otherwise

Thanks for the confirmation all and for the offer NaN. For the time being I'm going to pick up a cheap hood & frame combo and save the joy of fitting a hood to a frame for another day (year...decade...lifetime!).

Re: Hood & frame cross compatibility
The early MGF had a different frame to later MGF and TF. The change happened in mid 1997, half way through the run of the mk1 MGF.
Early frames fit later cars and vice versa, however early hoods only fit early cars and late hoods only fit late frames.
To tell the difference in hoods early ones had seams running the length of the car, later ones had the seams running across the car.
I don't know how to tell the frames apart.

Re: Hood & frame cross compatibility
I now have a 2004 hood and frame fitted to my '97 car. Rear window is back from Kevin in Nottingham and awaiting fitting.
