Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

MG Tuning?

Post by Phoenix » Sat Nov 10, 2007 11:26 pm

I'd really like to get a little extra performance out of my '98 VVC and just wondered what reccomendations anyone could make. I'm aware that a K&N 57i kit is a good point to start at but i'm stuck after that. I'm only looking to spend a few hundred pounds at first and don't want to waste it on dodgy/ lousy products. I've tried listening to some exhaust tests on youtube (of all places!) but can't really tell.

I know others on here cherish their MG's. Where did everyone else start?

A 52mm throttle body, plus a K&N filter and a good sports exhaust are a good starting point without breaking the bank. Once you have done that then there will be no stopping the DARKSIDE taking over.
Piper 4-2-1 Manifold, Daytona Back Box, Stage two Remap, Bilstein Shocks, thicker anti roll bars, PG 1 gearbox Caged bearing with type B Ltd Slip Diff. Large rear brake Kit, Toyo R888R Track/road tyres. Half Roll Cage, 4Point Harness.

For a couple of hundred quid, we're talking about a number of bolt-on goodies - which is the route I took for a good number of years, with results that have pleased me immensely. In order of fitment, I'd go:

1. K&N - can be worth other 8bhp if given an adequate cold air supply (Filter power tests: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/ai ... g_road.htm)
2. Replacement exhaust - the best systems are worth up to 5bhp (Exhaust power tests: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/ex ... ntents.htm)
3. 52mm throttle body (TB power tests: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/DI ... onclusions)
4. Exhaust manifold - a 4-2-1 is what you want - a number on the market from Piper and Janspeed etc - not got formal testing on these yet, but worth plenty of low-mid range torque
5. Might be worth considering a cat bypass or sports cat, but gains are not great (power tests: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/ex ... alysts.htm)

After this, you might consider NOS - or head work, cams, alternative ECU and multiple throttle bodies - but we're talking ever increasing costs and relatively diminishing return for money invested... But true darkside territory :)
