Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.
Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.
Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway!
Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

VVC Model differences
Hi
Wannabe potential MGF owner here. Please can someone help with theses questions?
Attempting to cut a long story short, with my partner originally wanting a Clio and then seeing an MGF for sale on our intranet at work, I have now had a two week baptism of fire into the ins and outs of MGFs!
I now find myself considering a V reg. 99 MGF, my questions relate to this model.
How can I tell if this model is VVC? Are there any cosmetic or trim differences?
For a nice MGF, is VVC a deal breaker?
Could this car be a Mk2?
Apart from clear front indicator lenses, what are the Mk1 Mk2 differences?
This car has what look like Minilite rims – are these MG wheels?
I would normally search previous threads but time is very limited so sorry if these questions appear elsewhere.

Re: VVC Model differences
Welcome to the MGF Register Forums.
There are a few tell tale signs to look out for to check it is a genuine VVC.
This list is probably not exhaustive but is a good start:
1. 8th digit of VIN no. should be a letter T (check this against the V5)
2. VVC emblzoned on the plenum (easily seen by opening the boot and looking at the top of the engine).
3. The red line in the rev counter should be at 7200rpm.
4. VVC cars have 5 spoke alloys (although these are easily changed by previous owners).
5. I believe all VVC cars were fitted with ABS.
I'm sure there are 1 or 2 other checks but can't recall off the top of my head.
Having driven both MPi and VVC I personally would say that the VVC is very nice to drive and gives you a bit more performance wise. Is it a deal breaker? That's tricky as it's a personal thing. I would prefer a good quality MGF above all. VVC is certainly nice to have. I personally wouldn't call it a deal breaker but you may think differently.
On a 99 plate it's likely to be a Mk1. We have a 99 plate VVC F registered in December 99 and it's a Mk1.
Again there are a number of differences which I can't remember at the moment but an obvious one is the centre console. Mk2 is similar to what is currently fitted to TFs with the round gear knob surround.
I'm sure someone will be along soon to fill in the gaps.
Good luck with the search. Let us know how you get on.

Re: VVC Model differences
Many, many thanks for the information.
I have more info about the car that may define it being a Mk1-Mk2.
It has an ally suround with allen bolts to the gear stick and ait has a digital milometer.

That's a Mk2 by the sound of it.

Re: VVC Model differences
Model change from Mark 1 to MY2K (Model Year 2000) actually occurred in 1999, so it could be either, however - your description of the alloys (minilite style) and the gear gaiter ring being alloy suggest it is a MY2K car.
Other tell tales include:
Smoked indicator lenses
Colour keyed windscreen surround (Mk1 Fs are all black)
Providing it is not a 1.6 model, 6 speaker I.C.E.
Oval surrounds to internal door pulls
Silver instrument faces (Mk1 Fs are cream)
Sounds to me like you have a MY2K 1.8 MPi (non-VVC).

Hi and welcome to the forum. I noticed you're in my patch so thought I'd better give you a shout!
We have one of our local members selling a rather nice charcoal VVC with tasteful mods (she wants an Audi TT! ). She's open to sensible offers! PM me with your contact details and I'll get you both talking!
Rich
