Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

engine indicator lamp.

Post by fastfreddie » Mon Aug 10, 2009 7:10 pm

My engine indicator has just lit on amber. There is no apparent coolant loss, oil and water temperature are normal.
The handbook says that this indicates that the exhaust has detected a fault in emmission?

I recommend taking it to a garage that has a T4 test book, this should pick up the fault and let you know where to go next.

It could be the oxygen sensor or the cat has become blocked or faulty, I'm sure there are other causes but these could be possibles.

Mine kept doing that on my first F. As Adrian said - could be many things. In my case it was bumpy roads in Hertfordshire!!

As has been said above your need to connect the car to some diagnostic equipment to see what the fault code is. However, if you take it to a garage with the T4 setup then it can be quite expensive. What year is your car? If it's 2001 onwards with Mems 3 then a generic OBD2 reader should be all that you need and this can switch the light off as well. Do you not know anyone with a reader (if it will fit)? During the winter I have started to SORN my car and moving it in and out of the garage sometimes brings the light on. I'm sure it's because the ECU thinks that there is something wrong because it never gets time to warm up. When out on the road it runs fine and the light never comes on. I bought an OBD2 reader and I switch it off myself rather than take it to a garage.

I aree with David. I also have bought a 'Reader' and get rid of the Engine Warning Light when ever it comes on. It keeps coming on since I fitted a Sports Cat. Converter and a Stainless Steel exhaust system. The Oxygen sensors (2 in the TF) are just too finicky with sensing minute alterations in the exhaust. If verything else seems normal this is almost certainly the problem. If you have a Low Water Sensor Kit (the B & G one) then that will give you ample warning in regards to any over heating problem - if the car still goes forward, then that's great. Cheers.
Eat your heart out! My car is a MGTF 160 Coupe LE - Monogram Black Olive - one of 30 in the world.

I have just fitted a similar system and would have a similar problem if you don't fit a small adaptor called a Mill Eliminator. It just adjsts the range that the second sensor reads and tells the ECU that the CAT is doing its job, which it is.
