Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

K&N F/TF differences

Post by Phoenix » Mon Nov 26, 2007 11:50 pm

I was just about to order a K&N 57i when i noticed something that puzzled me.

For the MGF-
1.8 16v All models (MPi) 1995> (57-0238) £80.98

For the MGTF-
135 1.8 16v (MPi) 135bhp 2002> (57-0438) £90.98
1.8 16v VVC (MPi) 160bhp 2002> (57-0438) £90.98

There is a different kit number for the F and TF. Is this anything to do with throttle bodies? I plan to fit a 52mm TB to my VVC. Will the 57-0238 still fit?

I believe the difference is because TF's don’t have Hydragas pipes underneath to secure the ends of the air feed hoses too. The TF kit is therefore supplied with an additional bracket that attaches the ends of the pipes to the front edge of the rear subframe, in a similar way to the infamous 'Tom Randle' bracket.

Although the TF has a 52mm Throttle body, the actual size of the intake where the filter hose connects is the same as with a 48mm throttle body. The position of the throttle body is slightly different on the TF and VVC F compared to the Mpi F. This doesn’t affect K&N's, but can affect enclosed induction kits. The ITG Maxogen for example has straight hose between the airbox and TB on MPI kit, and an 'S' shaped hose for TF applications, in order to ensure the ITG airbox sits in the right place.

I agree with Steve. Must be the fittings. I've got a LR Freelander one on mine! (in a Rover 827 airbox)... :D

Ah right i understand. Just so long as the K&N will fit on the 52mm TB then all is good. The Rover 820i airbox sounds like a good idea too.

The Rover 820i box is fine for the standard K&N filter. You may have noticed I put 827 in my lasy post. That's because it's slightly different in size and fitted my Freelander K&N perfectly. Also, it's not as critical for the TB size to be the same as a length of air ducting is required between the airbox and the TB. The airbox won't just go over the filter while it's attached to the TB directly.

*shocked* don't ever secure the air feed hoses to the hydragas pipes.

The 52mm version will allow an extra 17% air to flow giving a greater throttle response and it is noticeable.
Bilstein shocks, Piper 4-2-1 manifold, Daytona, Vader cold-air induction, custom Z and F Stage 2 re-map, Electric boot release, braided hoses, Blue Magnecor leads, Technozen relays, Stage 1 head, BMW Angel Eyes headlights, "MG" puddle lights.
