Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Reverse interference noise

Post by Charless » Fri Dec 18, 2009 9:14 pm

Recently mine has been making a lot of interference on the radio while reverse is selected, if the gear is used briefly it can cause the complete cut out of reception. Radio/cassette is the original Philips 741 and it has not been noticeable in previous years. Earth problem from reversing lights?

Hi Charles,

As well as checking for bad earths, don't forget the bulbs themselves. One (or both) may be on its (their) way out. I suggest that you remove both bulbs and then verify that your interference has gone. Assuming so, refit one bulb. Has the interference come back? If so, try the bulb in the other holder. Depending on what results you obtain, repeat the procedures with the other bulb with both holders. Also, thoroughly check out the bulb contacts in the rear of each light cluster. All bulbs (brake lights, side lights, indicators), just in case you are getting some freak feedback.

If you're wondering why I am suggesting a bulb on its way out - the element is a coil. So it can resonate under the right conditions.

Good luck. I will be interested to hear what you have discovered.
