Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

First you do not use 16in rims with low profile tyres as they cannot be used with snow chains.
The practice across Europe where winter tyres are Mandatory is to fit Four 14in Spare wheel rims with the same tyre size as original. I cannot give you the tyre size as I am currently in Switzerland in the Astra 1.8 fitted with Goodyear Winter Tyres.
'Spare wheels are available from most car wreckers for £15 each.
I have wheels and Goodyears being delivered next month for the March Geneva Run.

Hi Andy,
received the PM request.

I'm afraid, can't recommend anything with 195/55 R16. The are not legal in DE.

195 / 45 R16 winter tires on both axles is what the guys do here.
Any brand, nothing special.

Do we need snow tyres for this one? I was counting on efficient snow clearance by the host countries! (desperately checking for small print from Continental Car tours).
My main F did manage to circumnavigate the country ice roads around Basingstoke in the rush hours last monday week (Toyo T1Rs) so thought I might get away with cleared roads over there.

I went for the 195/55 as there is a better choice of makes over the 195/45s

Hi Dieter.
When I bought my car in Switzerland in 2000, the common winter tyres were 14in. These were offered by the Dealer Emil Frey but I chose to put the car in a neighbouring apartment block basement car park as I had a company Vectra.
In 2004, I had no company car. MGFs still used 14in, which I believe you also had, but the Astra 1.8 got the tyres as the Ski gear would not fit in the 'F'.
I see that you now use 195/45 R16. Is there a good reason for the change??. Is it a better set up or because alloy wheels are now cheaper than new steels ??. I cannot find an Approval for these on the rear. It is not permitted on my C of C. It is not on your Website although the 14in are.
I would appreciate your thoughts before I put some new winter tyres on the car.
Thanks.
Geoff F.
