MOT advisory - play in nsr top suspension joint
Please does anyone know what this may mean and whether this is a garage-job or a reasonably confident DIY'er can sort this? I have seen all the advice about super-duper polybush replacements but is this what this MOT advisory means? (MGF 1998) Thanks

The top balljoint has gone - it's not *too* bad a job, I found it easier on the rear as the suspension swivels around less so you don't need to restrain it from turning as you undo the balljoint. You do need a huge socket to remove the balljoint, if you go to any motor factor and ask for a 'metro balljoint socket' they'll know what you mean.
Get the suspension set up after the balljoint has been changed to avoid any unnecessary tyre wear, as your last alignment was probably done when the balljoint was just starting to go.

Be careful when dismantling to support the hub assembly as failing to do so may damage the brake flexible pipe. They're not cheap to replace!
Providing you've got the right socket it's not a long job. Don't try and do it with a spanner as you'll take the corners off the nut.

Undo the two bolts and release the caliper from its carrier - you can then support it somewhere and work on the hub without worry. Unclip the ABS sensor wiring from its bracketry also..Reckless Rat wrote:Be careful when dismantling to support the hub assembly as failing to do so may damage the brake flexible pipe. Thank you both. Forgive me for being dum but...
is it the washers (rubber bushes) that have gone at the lower end of the damper which connects to the upper suspension arm? What part(s) am I likely to need to replace? Are these ones that can be replaced by polybushes? is this what is being dealt with at http://www.apttony.co.uk/?

No, it's the ball/swivel joint at the top of the hub that connects it to the top suspension arm..

The socket size is 46 mm. With an impact air tool the ball joint will come out easily.
