Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

In-laws having this exact problem with their 2005 TF at the moment. It also made a faint noise from the engine bay.

Apparently got it running today, a loose wire was causing the problem, however my other half didn't know any further details! Possibly the plug on the alarm ECU.

I will post again when I find out.

Sounds like the alarm to me - MEMS will allow the engine to run for a couple of seconds when the code it receives is wrong or non existant, but will stop fuelling shortly after; and will only work after Key Off, and then to attempt to start again.

Hi, I replied earlier as a car of ours was suffering with similar symptoms .

The 2005 TF we were having problems with is now running again.

The cause: a loose plug on the Immoboliser/Alarm ECU. This is located behind the light in the driver's footwell.
When we pushed the plug firmly back into the ECU, we first noticed that the red light on the dash board started illuminating as it should again (this had not been working), upon trying the engine - it started and ran fine!

Hope this helps and good luck!

NB: Edited to correct typographical error.

cheers guys
problem solved loose connection on ecu causing ecu to be dead
had set up on diagnostic ecu replaced plus new plipps (old ones become redundant) if ecu replaced
moral
alarms fitted to last mgtfs carnt be reprogrammed (uprated thacham cat 1) only option is to replace at
a very reasonable cost not .........ecu £300 Plipps £50 x 2 .......add towing add labour then times it all by 17.5% (governments cut) even though they give bugger all back for it oh apart from increasing fuel duty and yes vat again (must be in wrong job) and spend s fa on roads

pleased to say car running great always ran rovers (you name it i have had it )till yes that robbing bunch called government allowed those germans chappies to strip it and let it go to ruin
