Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

coolant pipe corrosion

Post by Snowman001 » Thu Jan 21, 2010 9:25 pm

Hi Guys,

This is my first post!. I needed some help and saw the website on an MGF that lives about 3 roads form me!. Its purple and lives in Epsom by the way.....

I had my car in the local MG garage where they replaced the underfloor coolant pipes for 250!!! as they froze in the weather. I know i was robbed......

So i have my car back and still have a coolant leak. I have found it.........

Its under the main console. Pictures - http://s769.photobucket.com/albums/xx340/PAULAYALA123/

Also i am quite sure its pipe 16 in this figure - http://s769.photobucket.com/albums/x...d.jpg&newest=1

So - How would i get to this pipe/s to replace it ? Can i somehow as its a small area paint over wack loads solder over it or something ??

If i HAD to get a garage to fix it how much SHOULD that cost ? And long would it take.

I am poor becasue there is a recession on.

Paul

I struggled with the links to see which photo you meant.
The price seems maybe a little on the high side, even if they sourced and fitted stainless steel ones(£65), supplied and refilled new OAT antifreeze(£20) and then bled the system very thoroughly. This doesn't sound so likely if they missed another leak, neither should the original antifreeze have frozen in the cold spell of late - it would have had to be very old and useless. It is very difficult to help without seeing what you mean. Is the car driveable and might you be able to get to a South East F register meeting for knowledgeable and friendly (free!) assistance/advice? Perhaps repost a clearer picture of the current leak?

Hello Mate,

Thanks for relying. I think i got connect a bit.... But thats ok.

The two pipes (t and from the heater) are in the center of the car between the two seats. Hard to see but its the black one with rust!!!

Here is a better view of the pipe

I have done some research and i think i can get to it by taking the whole center console and rear console out the car.

The lead is like a pinrick and only leaks when the pipes get hot and there is pressure. I am thinking some metal epoxy resin to the pinhole and before it cures tighten a jubilee clip over the blob/pinhole

I would take it back and tell them that they have changed the wrong pipe as it still leaks. Give me my money back and charge me £50 to change the right pipe or at least fix it FOC.

I think you already have the answer, and that Geoff has a twinkle in his eye!
Heater pipes are not a common failure on the F sites that I frequent. Good luck!

Hi Guys,

Just thought i would let you all know i nfixed the problem......

Stripped the inside of my car out and got to the pipe. Got it fixed for £2...........not 290 as the garage advised.

Pictures are here - http://s769.photobucket.com/albums/xx340/PAULAYALA123/

If anyone has the same problem i hope this helps.

Paul
