Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Hi there, without looking at the car, the symptoms could indicate head gasket failure. Have you checked the engine oil level and condition ? (It should be clean and free of coolant), it may appear like mayonnaise if contaminated.

Have you checked the coolant level, it should be around the seam of the expansion tank when cold.

If these are clear and correct, then it may just be the expansion tank cap letting by, that should be replaced immediately. You cannot afford to lose too much water in an F as it does not hold much, obviously engine damage will occur if driven in that condition.

You have not said about the water temperature guage, what was that showing ?

Be very careful, and I wouldn't try using the car again until you or a mechanic gets to have a look at the car.

I presume that you mean the oil temperature gauge? The MGF doesn't have a pressure gauge, unless one has been fitted as aftermarket.

A sudden drop in oil pressure is very very worrying, and is usually a sign that something expensive has gone wrong.

A sudden drop of oil temperature is more difficult to explain - unless the sensor or loom has failed, or the sensor is no long in the oil flow...

Check out the coolant and oil - make sure that the coolant still looks like coolant (green or orange antifreeze) and the oil still looks like oil (usually dark brown/black if well used). If you see no coolant in the expansion tank, or vast quantities of buttery-brown coloured oily stuff (affectionately known as "mayonnaise") then Adrian's right, you've had a head gasket failure...
