Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Speedometer

Post by svante » Sun Mar 14, 2010 3:15 pm

Hi
My speedometer is wery unstedy att low speed. Can it depend of the speedometer or is it some of the speedometer cables? I thougt it would be the speedometer cables but after dismounted them I could not see any defects.
I dont want to buy cables unnecessarily so if there is someone who knows anything about this matter...

Thanks in advance,

Svante

I´m living in Umeå in the north part of Sweden. It´s still a lot of snow here but the sun is shining and we are looking forward to the spring when I can take my MGF out of the garage (hopefully with the speedometer and a couple of other things in mint conditioning).

Thanks for your quicke answer so that I know that my question is on the Forum.

Regards Svante

No, I´m not. The meeting is before my holiday and when Öland is about 1000 km away from Umeå I cant do it as a weekend trip. The distance is a little about a problem because there are no MG-workshops within 500 km from my home (and rather few MGF-owners in this town to ask if there is a problem).

Hi Svante,

As far as I know the Mk1 cable driven speedo is usually a bit unsteady at low speeds (up to about 40 mph or 60 kph) I'm quite used to it by now after 10 years of ownership. I do not think there is a 100% solution to it.
MGFvvc - 90FVBG - charcoal - you might think it is original - (1996 nr:8204)
MGTF 120 - 57RNJ7 - BRG - every day is an MG day - (2005)
MGC CGT - SJ08DY - tartan red - 1985 restauration fairly original - (1968 nr: 4137)

There's a tech bulletin about it, the fault is due to cable misalignment at the joints - separate the cable at the joint under the cover under the bonnet, turn the speedometer side of the cable 90 degrees and refit it. Then drive the car and see if it's any better, keep attempting turning the cable by 90 degrees until you get the best result.

If the problem does not go away, try the same work on the joint at the front of the rear subframe under the floor. You will get speedo operating relatively smoothly with some patience - mine is certainly acceptable now, and it had a major wibble before.

Brian's spot on - it is a manifestation of the inner cable sticking inside the outer that can occur either when the lubricant has dried out, or where the cable is 'pre-torqued' by a degree of twist in the cable between the three cable sections.

Mine's still got a bit of a wobble - not yet got around to sorting this out, but by doing what Brian's described, the worst of the wobble has gone :)

Thanks all,

I´ll try to adjust the cables as recommended. I just have to wait until the snow in front of my garage has melted (it´s about 70 cm) so that I can get the car out of it... :)

Thanks again,
Svante

Edit: I`ll give you an update when I`ve tried it.
