Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

F Suspension HydroGas replacements

Post by AndyG » Thu Aug 05, 2010 4:44 pm

Copy of Email from Suplex.

F Suspension HydroGas replacements:

Our SUPLEX SUSPENSION conversion to the MGF is pretty well as described by Roger Parker in the MGOC magazine.
My first involvement with the MGF was assisting in the set up of the Trophy cars with Wynn Mitchell. These cars still running Hydrogas of course were restricted to damper tuning work only. At that time I was Technical Director of Eibach and we had a high tech race damper programme. The MGF race series was the first series to use those dampers.
It wasn’t long before I became heavily involved in the development of the coil sprung MGTF with the development engineers from MG-Rover.
Later I was to be thrown down the challenge of developing this conversion. Having been told it was impossible. I set out to prove that wrong. Also by this time I had set up the business centre of SUPLEX GmbH the German specialist suspension companies UK operation as managing director. I was approached by Caterpillar’s MG-ROVER spares division who were desperately seeking Hydrogas units as the supply was completely at an end to develop an alternative. This prompted the completion of the project which I’d had in embryo state for some time.
Where we are now is having two prototype car sets available. One on our own development car and one which will be fitted as a feature article to come out shortly taking the reader through all the steps in performing the conversion.
Essentially this conversion is designed to salvage a car when the Hydrogas fails and no replacement can be found. Whilst the concept and construction lends it’s self to further tuning work, in its base form that is not the intention. It is designed to replicate as nearly as possible the characteristics of a standard MGF.
It was also intended that the completed design would require no modification work at all and that the conversion could be fitted quickly with simple tools. This we have achieved.
In order to achieve realist costs we are having to produce the parts we need in very large quantities, minimum one thousand pieces at a time. Hence we need to gauge interest at this time.
We are now confident there is a demand and are putting our first volume pieces into product during August 2010. We anticipate having the kit available in November 2010.
Our target retail price for the complete conversion is £850.00 + VAT
Which will include two front and two rear conversion canisters plus two front and two rear dampers. We expect to make these available at this price from recognised MG specialists.

Thx Andy! I experienced the words of Roger Parker in Enjoying MG and at his talk during MGF15 as very promising. Now the next surprise by Mr White! We only have to wait and test drive by ourselves to get convinced this is the new development to keep the MGF on the road for a long, long time.... :thumbsu:

IIRC, the MGOC magazine stated a target price of £800 and nothing about inc/excl. VAT. This is becoming quite expensive and might be available too late, as I spotted some green stained traces on the rear LH suspension arm and have recently dumped two of my Spax shocks as they were faulty during the outbound (keeping the car on the bumpstops).

Are there any details on the shocks they use ?

As suggested in MGOC Mag, Email them and register an interest to keep the process going forward.

All we need now is a small jet engine, powering a generator, electric motors on all 4 wheels, a 500W PA system with the sound of a 260. :P

New shocks are included in the kit as they are matched with the springs. Nevertheless it would be good to know if they are of good quality or replaceable by upgraded ones.......

For those who are interested, Clive Berry of Suplex UK has just informed me the replacement units are currently being manufactured and should be available in February 2011.

I wonder whether they'll be doing up-rated "sports" or "trophy" spec in due course? ;)
