Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. For the information of anyone living in Grampian region -

Murrays Garage, Alford, also can pressurise hydragas systems. This Garage is not on the 'hydragas' website.

Hi all, being new to this forum I may slightly confused so it that is the case, please put it down to my newness.

With respect to pumping up spheres and correcting ride height there appear to be two schools of thought on the forum:
One would pump oil into the sphere to achieve appropriate height, and the other, modify the sphere to allow a charge of nitrogen gas, plus (presumably), a sufficient quantity of oil below the membrane, to be added.

Is there a definitive way to establish whether or not ride height should be amended by charging with oil or nitrogen. (Or both for that matter).
Logic suggests that if the root cause is dissipation of the nitrogen gas over time, then charging with oil is not a root cause solution.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on whether it is possible to establish which of the two core elements are responsible for lowering of the ride height.

Thanks,
Michael.

You need Hydragas fluid not oil to re-pump up to normal height. Have a read of Rob Bells page on Hydagas. I think he can explain it better than me and he has pictures too .. http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/su ... dragas.htm

His main site is full of useful information http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/

As mentioned above, its not oil :)

yes, if you pump up the Hydragas fluid and the suspension/Ride quality is rock hard the Nitrogen is depleted and needs topping up (as is the case in my F).

I now have a pump etc to be able to pump up Hydragas suspension. I am between Winchester and Alton if anyone wants to borrow or wants me to pump up their Hydragas :)

It is right that you have 2 parts to the hydragas system the fluid & gas.
The fluid sets the height and gas is the suspension (as fluid does not compress).
So when your suspension losses height its the gas that is dropping but you compensate that with the fluid.
The spheres had a designed life of 10-15 years with no way of re-filling the nitrogen.
So basically all f's will be low on nitrogen now and its a bit of a specialist job to modify the spheres to to take more nitrogen.
So if you want to keep your f for years to come this is one of the routes you will have to take to keep it driveable! (just do it before they get rock hard as this can damage the membranes! Also As there are no new spheres being manufactured for well over 10years)

Thanks

If you go to the Hydragas Register:
www.hydragas.co.uk
You will find several garages in Surrey who can pump-up your suspension.

Hi Colin and others,

I know its a bit late but I am a newbie here, I read on the MG-Rover forum regarding hydrolastic pumps, I am in Norwich and it is difficult to find someone who still does the suspension pump ups for vehicles. Therefore I searched on ebay to purchase one and they are £70- 80 :o but after reading that thread I came across the attached. A test pump for central heating systems! Albeit it needs a schrader valve adapter. So I will give it a shot at £33 + £6 for the schrader adapter. We will see :thumbsu:

6 for the adapter?
I wonder where you'll find that.
Its a specialty product and likely to cost more than the pump.

Looks like it should do the job. Not sure why an ordinary screw on Schrader connector (as fitted to my pump) should be so 'specialist' jaapaap?

I use this type now - it will do the job very nicely and much more easily than the oil/grease gun type pump (that I originally used). I would get a longer flexible pipe than the one illustrated and also the expensive (but well worth it IMHO) Schraeder 'low loss connector' - which is what jaapaap is referring to.

Gas is what most of us need , the good news is that the original Dunlop filling rig has been saved and you can get the spheres regassed with no drilling and welding using the original ports on top of the sphere for £27 each ,or you could send them to Telford for £350.
If you look for other threads on here about Hydragas the contact details are there.
