Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Steering Wheel

Post by andywatson » Wed Oct 19, 2011 10:35 am

Has anyone fitted a momo steering wheel to their MGF, I am looking at getting the Momo commando with boss and quick release kit. Is fitting a simple job or am I going to encounter any problems.

No, but I've fitted an aftermarket wheel to Project Shed using a Momo steering wheel boss.

The Momo boss that I have used is the one developed for the R25/ZR vehicles - and their steering splines are identical to that used on the MGF. So too is the rotary coupler. The Momo boss fits perfectly...

BUT...

The clowns at Momo have designed their boss incorrectly. There is insufficient space for the electrical connectors on the rotary coupler (you can read all about this particular nightmare in Part 13 of Project Shed that is about to come out in FTF).

If you don't plan to mount the horn on the steering wheel, then you'll have no problems. Remove the rotary coupler, and no worries. If you plan to retain a steering wheel mounted horn, then you'll need to modify the rotary coupler. I cut mine down, filed a 45degree camfer on it's inner edge, bent the electrical connectors over - and having done this, the plug will fit... but it is a bit of a PITA.

If you are planning a quick release steering wheel conversion, then you'll be looking at a different arrangement anyway, so the rotary coupler is perhaps not so much of an issue, as you'll probably need either a remote horn button, or a flexible, disconnectable cable.

Something to think about definitely.

BTW how well do these things wear these days? I recall from the early days that they had a habbit of wearing out their mounting splines when repeated fitted and removed? Might be further developed and more reliable these days?
