This is sad news. How has the head gasket failed?

I think its just fatigue i was not pushing the car noticed the temp rising as it usually never rides above just below halfway stopped and the coolant had dropped ,i let it cool and topped up got it home ok, left it overnight and found it had drained completely no sign of water from under the car it had drained into the oil , i have flushed the oil system now and refilled with fresh oil, engine runs a treat albeit for a short time as there is no coolant haven't the time to repair myself as i have other projects going on , if it does not sell then i will roll it to the back of the garage until next year or whenever i get the urge to take it apart. The parts alone are worth the money i am asking but i don't want it scrapped its far to good, a friend of mine said it is only going up in value even with the HGF. Time will tell hay ho.
