MGF for Spares or Repair

Post by Andrew Vigor » Wed Jan 12, 2022 4:25 pm

This car is located near Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. Engine is damaged due to broken cambelt tensioner. It is advertised in the current Safety Fast but will be scrapped soon if there are no takers. Get in touch if you are interested.

From the age (1998?) and wheel design, this will be a 1.8 litre MPi. Hope we can find a home for this one Andrew!

Hi, Here are some more pictures. Upholstery is cloth - interior seems ok but needs a good clean. Owner wants about £300. I think as Rob says it's a 1.8 but I'll get this checked. The car is in a farm shed in West Yorkshire. There is a lift so the underside can be checked. The engine is damaged so the car will need to be transported away.

Just to confirm that this is indeed a 1.8 MPi.

Andrew, is there a picture of the combustion chamber side of the cylinder head? Although the liner of cylinder 4 has popped out, the pistons look okay (I think someone has been scraping away at the carbon deposits on cylinder 3). I suspect bent valves rather then dropped valves.

In terms of the "save-ability" of the car, can you get some pictures of the front wings (ahead of the front wheels, where it meets the bumper), the sills - and particularly of the sill/ rear quarter panel ahead of the rear wheel. Judging by the condition of the visible rear subframe, this car has seen some salt in its 62k miles... but not a deal breaker.

Thanks Rob, I have attached a picture of the combustion side of the cylinder head. Also a picture of the nearside. I will get some pictures of the bodywork areas you have detailed asap.

Thanks Andrew. The paint clearly is not great, but the sills look okay (may be previously repaired, but possibly original). May be some bubbling around the engine side intakes?

The cylinder head actually looks salvagable. There are tell-tails of the exhaust valves hitting the cylinders. Not sure why cylinder 4 looks so oily? Anyway, that is neither here nor there as the engine will need a rebuild (not too difficult) or replacement (relatively simple). A good project I think!
