Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Currently sitting in a box in the garage is the 5AS, ignition lock and ECU off the 99 Build VVC which I have working fob for. Could easily add the EPAS ECU as well. Shame your so far away.

It's nice and tidy Philip :)

That does look nice; quite professional looking. It would be interesting to compare its functionality to Blackbox's Faulmate, which I have for my F.

I think the software side will continue to develop. Chatting to Phillip, obviously he needs to make a return on the investment (I've no idea how much time he's sunk into the project so far?!) and cover costs, but he is a car enthusiast, and this kit is aimed at the enthusiast like us.

Whether the software side can be left open for keen developers to develop new apps using the hardware that's been developed is an interesting area: certainly not something that is currently available to us MG Rover owners! I know the Lotus guys are keen to see whether the kit can be used in conjunction with mobile phone apps (Harry's Laptimer etc for track days) - and this would break this little black box away from the purely diagnostic tool market... Let's wait and see what Phillip can do!

I really don't like the answer I'm going to give, but I think it's the truth.

a few days to set up the company with Companies House, which is a prerequisite for
a week or two to get through Kickstarters security checks
a month to achieve the target (i.e sell it), which has to be June
July and August to manufacture and build it, given that I have to spend two weeks building a new Kitchen and I would like a holiday, and I have kids
deliver in September

I should have done the first two steps already. I really didn't know it would take that long.

I suppose for a lucky few they might get their interface in July, but I can't see much happening in August.

Phillip
Your prototype is looking professional for sure.
Have you considered how it would connect to the mini SPi data interface which is a 3 pin for the ECU and a separate connector for the 5AS. :sf:
It would obviously require a different lead to your blackbox. I note on the Sykes Pickavant ACR system they also have an additional power lead..perhaps something else to consider
I am interested in that possibility for playing with my sons mini for both the ECU and 5AS. there aren't too many options here in Canada for getting help on the road.

Phillip,
I really appreciate the effort and funds you invest in this project. What I found most interesting is that your s/w will also run om MacOS X, which would give it kind of a USP in the market. Would be great if the development could at some point include alarm unit to ECU marriage and key fob programming. Or even better, unlocking features of the Pektron BCUs ... (just dreaming  )

I would be ready to give you a substantial backing on kickstarter, but having to register with them somehow keeps me from doing so. Will you be at Silverstone for MG90?

Mykel

PS: If you need any help with localising the s/w for a German (or other) language version, I'd be happy to offer my assistance.

The testing day will be on June the 15th chaps - if you have a Mini, MG, Rover, Lotus, Caterham or anything else with a Rover engine and MEMS engine management, bring it along.

I'll also bring along my key programmer for EKA extraction/ key programming.

Location wise it will be either be in the Plough Pub's car park (Enfield) or at a local trading estate car park (Fiern Barnet) - depending on what's needed: more details soon! :)

A very interesting project!

If access to diagnostic equipment will help with your endeavour, I can offer the following...

Omitec Omiscan II

Blackbox Solutions MSV2 (Uses Windows based software, connects via RS232)

Avon Diagnostics interface (Uses windows based software, connects via RS232), this is probably the original "cheap" tool for MG-Rover applications. The
interface is based on two PIC chips and diagnostically it supports MEMS1.6, 1.9, 2J, 3 and the 5AS.

What is the planned cost when in production please?

Have never had nor used any reader but with four Rover or MG cars now it seems plausible that one may be very useful in the future.
