Re: Mgf donor car: building an MG Allegro VVC!
Doing a few trim bit last night, added number plate lights and door rubbers etc.
Hadn't run in a few weeks so gave it a quick rev

Looking fantastic Ed!
I really like the mk1 grille: that’s inspired. And the early stainless trim is a must IMO.

Cheers Rob, it was a toss up between that and a much later plastic Equipe grille
Not done a huge amount over Xmas but there isn't loads left to do really!
Insurance bought and paid for, starts in a few weeks.
Fitted the washer bottle and plumbed in the jets.
Blue interior, ordered some padding for the cage.
Started making some door cards in Ally

It is a bit cheek clenching but glass held in with the rubber strip isn't too bad to fit, done it a couple of times - car is looking good.

Thanks, I broke the windscreen getting it out so happy to pay for the replacement to be fitted. Laminated ones are hard to find as they were all xxx from new which explodes rather than cracks.
Wipers and squirters all on, currently repainting the rocker cover as it was peeling due to poor prep work!
After that hopefully the road salt will have gone and we'll have a drive of it

They are easier to crack on the way out but the risk of explosion is worth the extra cost.

Why did you peel off the protective foil from the alloy door cards? I liked the design with the upward arrows, and it was a perfect colour match, too!

If it were a Reliant Robin with a VVC engine, that would make sense!

Don't knock Reliant Robins, they're actually quite good fun to drive. Clarkson did them no favours with his mucking around on Top Gear. I managed to break a rear shock absorber through "over vigorous cornering", at least that's what the garage report said after they'd inspected it.

Anything silly can be fun, I'd quite like a kitten with a bike engine.
Rocker cover stripped, etch primed this time ready for 2k paint rather then a rattle can.
Bought myself a big bra, very useful for shopping and helmets.
Mini GT style stripes?

Re: Mgf donor car: building an MG Allegro VVC!
Mini GT strips are perfect - but surely they should be white with white lettering?
Also, too late but I'd have gone for either "1796 GT" or "Allegro 1796 GT" (Could substitute for "All agro 1796 GT" for full comedic effect )

Re: Mgf donor car: building an MG Allegro VVC!
Haha I did think about Allegro 1796 or 1800, GT wouldnt have meant anything though so VVC it is
Now I cant stop looking at Spitfires, and the spare K series in the garage isn't helping

Re: Mgf donor car: building an MG Allegro VVC!
I thought about a K in a Spitfire (I have a 1967 Mk3 and Tim Fenna was trying to convince me it was a good idea when I went to him for a 5-speed Type9 gearbox conversion). The K would be great in a later swing spring rather than swing axle. You might want to upgrade the rear to GT6 spec to better handle the power and torque. And the front hubs to GT6 for the bigger front brakes.
But these cars are mechano - you'll find it easy

Re: Mgf donor car: building an MG Allegro VVC!
Looks fairly straight forward, just the mounts to fabricate really and find a k series to type 9 bellhousing
Unlike the Allegro people seem to have done most swaps with Spitfires, Cosworth, mazda, K series, Chevy small block, Honda S2000, Zetec
Wouldn't quite be as exclusive, but I'm keeping my eye out.
Thought I'd rebuild the spare steering rack this weekend, the factory support bush is made of nylon and it cracks and falls apart over time. This one actually wasn't too bad but still caused play in the rack and an annoying knocking sound.
Rebuilt with a bronze support bush that I had machined to fit exactly. No more play

Had some nice looking bits waiting for me when I got to work this morning

Re: Mgf donor car: building an MG Allegro VVC!
Repainted rocker all fitted.
Short test drive on some totally private roads, it works! It is sitting very low on the TF coilovers, they are meant for bigger wheels so this is causing some major camber. I've raised it an inch since I took this and it's appears much better. Ordered some standard R100 ball joins which may also help if needed. Extra ground clearance is also better even if it doesn't look quite so badass.
First time I've been more than walking speed in it and the pedal force required to stop it is rather more than I was hoping for. I've looked at fitting bigger discs but it's not happening under the 14's which are staying. I checked the pads and the ones I fitted were unknown, they looked very brittle and one had a raised area so wasn't making full contact with the disc. Changed for some standardish Apec pads today, ran it in 4th gear, off the ground with some brake pressure for a few min, brake discs now cleaned evenly so I shall try again. Plan B is fit a remote servo on the front line or grow some leg muscle.

It’s looking serious good now! especially the front end - loving that 70’s vibe!
Different master cylinder? Most likely the remote servo is needed I suspect...
