Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

which end has it snapped at?

If the back end, use a mole grip on the cable

No-one will tell you how to do this on open forum for security reasons. If you send me a PM and identify yourself I might be able to give you a clue, but if you tell anyone about it the committee will be round to your house to confiscate your car and give you a right kick in the gonads for good measure!

Bonnet release cable snapped

The message stays in your outbox till RR logs on and reads it. Once he has read it it will disappear from your outbox.

Don't panic. The message isn't stuck - it's just the way the forum software deals with PMs.

I'm sure RR will reply next time he logs on.

Whilst rust on the exposed end of the cable does weaken it, the most likely cause of it snapping is it's working too hard, trying to release the latch mechanism when it's partially seized with rust is more work than the cable was designed for. Plus... it makes the task of releasing the latch using the 'confidential' method much less difficult if the latch mechanism is moving freely. Fitting a replacement cable without attending to the corrosion in the latch mechanism means you'll not be able to rely on it not happening again, so a bit of time spent de-greasing, de-rusting & re-greasing the assembly is time very well spent. A bath in some paraffin does a good job of softening the caked grease/dirt/rust mix so it can be brushed clean with a long-bristle brush, petrol works too, then a bath or 3 in a rust-eating solution like Bilt Hamber Deox-C, then re-grease liberally, and it'll be good for 10+ years, more if you spray on some wax protection.

Hi I am still unable to open the bonnet of my mgf as the cable has snapped off the lock mechanism, my battery is totally dead, and I can jump start the vehicle from the cigarette light either, so I can't do anything with my car, can someone please pm me with some instructions on how to get it open I am in urgent need.
