Blue skies means hoods down. Certainly true as the Register gathered on
a crisp morning at the Holiday Inn, Rugby ready to set off for day 1 of
a late winter weekend in the Midlands. Designed to enhance the
Stoneleigh International MG Show the next day Saturday consisted of a
scenic run from Rugby to Coventry taking in the Naseby Battlefields en
route. Most of us stopped here , or were forced off the road anyway by
rampant horse boxes, to take in some of the history of the place before
moving on towards Coventry City centre. What an excellent finish point
the Coventry Transport Museum proved to be with a line of colourful Fs
all along the curved front of the futuristic building with its
spiralling walkways and octopus tentacles.. On the forecourt was a
stylised world map with time zones on which the cars parked attracting a
lot of attention from the general public. Inside the museum were
some fascinating exhibits from the local area including Princess Di's
Metro and two Thrust speed machines as piloted by Richard Noble amongst
many other well presented vehicles and dioramas. A short walk away we
found the quieter but poignant modern Cathedral juxtaposed to the bombed
out remnants of the old Cathedral, a reminder of tougher times. A
Banquet at a hotel on the outskirts of Coventry in the evening had been
arranged by Keith and Steve and proved to be a great night with
brilliant food and very reasonable prices ! This set us up nicely for
the following day at Stoneleigh itself. We had a spring display this
year with three bright yellow cars , the Trophy Twins from the South
East and Andy Knott's sunspot TF which only just made it to the show in
time. Daffodils and rabbits completed the scene as Elaine took control
of the Regalia . Unusually this year we shared the stand with the ZR/ZS/ZT
Register and it proved very successful with another yellow car, Nick
Holland's ZR ,completing our front row and two blue Zeds around the
corner. There were several stalls with an MGF flavour and the cowsheds
were once again overflowing with F/TFs. Overall a good weekend
augmented by the additional day out on Saturday which may well become a
feature of future Stoneleighs for the Register. |
