 What's a Method Build ?

The method build is an old Honda term and sees the final stage of the Quailty Prototype runs. In this case the method build was a repeat of QP4 - each stage sees more refinement added.

Between March and July 1995 the final Quality Prototype run was produced at Longbridge in CAB2.

On June 1st the first meeting was held with Rover Japan concerning competition car development . Peter Stevens became involved with the competition cars at this stage designing a stylish hard top for the one make series.. development work as by Roy Ford with Tony Pond and Warren Mitchell. The changes needed for a competition car were finally priced very reasonably at only £4000 above the standard car price. The cars were built by Janspeed Engineering and sent back to gaydon for further suspension adjustments before being shipped off to Japan. Cars were also produced for the French race series.

On July 3rd the final method build was started. There were to be 50 vehicles produced in this run .

They were not all produced at the same time - the first through is known as the "Kite Flyer" and was carefully measured and sent down the line at the projected rate of build. Cars were then sent down the line in groups of five or six and returned to the Project Phoenix team for inspection. After adjustments were made another group would go down the production line and so on.

What is CAB 2 ?

Car Assembly Building 2 at Longbridge had not been used for some eight years  but was resurrected to produce PR3 but alos to extend the "Rover Tomorrow" programme.

Neil Jauncey headed the project not only to build PR3 but also bring CAB2 on line.

New workers were employed to run the plant and high standards of recruitment used which saw 80% of applicants rejected.

CAB2 also produced Rover 200 Coupe and cabriolet cars.
