MGF Register Registration Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is done with the information that I submit?

A: All information that we collect is treated confidentially and is not passed on to any third parties. The information is used by the Register to build a clear picture of what cars our members own, where in the country they are and to provide a history trace for cars that pass through the register. The MGF register is a part of the MG Car Club, and is covered in the club under the data protection act.

Q: Why do I have to be a member of the MG Car Club to register with you?

A: On events we operate an 'open door' policy whereby any MGF/TF owner is welcome to participate (perhaps you'll join us!) - but we do have to consider our members first, so where places are limited, you can guess who will get first consideration!

Q: Where can I find my VIN or Engine number?

A: The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number - also known as the chassis number) can be seen through the windscreen on the left side of the car. The engine number is most readily found on the car's V5 Document (Log Book) where the VIN can also be easily found.

Q: Ok, I've found my VIN, but what IS is?

A: The VIN is your car's unique Vehicle Identification Number. It allows you to trace your car's history (such as accident damage through an authority like the HPI) and also is useful should you wish to find out when exactly the car was built and left the factory. In the future, the register would like to offer it's members the facility to compare their car's VIN with others' - useful to solve those old "mine’s older than yours'" arguments!

Q: That's all very well, but what does it all mean!?

A: The VIN breaks down into something like this...

S A R RD W B G/T B/M/J/X A D 000001

S = Geographic Area

A = Country

R = Manufacturer

RD = Marque/Model

W = Body/Trim Level

B = Body Style (2 Door Convertible)

G/T = Engine Type (G - K Series 1.8 MPI) (T - K Series 1.8 VVC)

B/M/J/X = Steering & Transmission (B -RHD Manual) (M - LHD Manual) (J - RHD CVT) (X - LHD CVT)

A = Model Change

D = Assembly Plant

6 Figures = Serial Number

Q: I see on my identification plate under the bonnet there's a paint and trim code too, what are these for?

A: These three digit codes identify your car's colour name and the name of the interior trim.

Q: Ok, but how do I read them?

A: The paint and trim codes each break down into something like this...

L Q W

L = Basic Colour

Q = Mark/Identifier

W = Colour/Shade Name

Q: I don't want to enter my details online, is there another way or doing it?

A: Certainly, on the registration page there is the option to download and print out a registration form in PDF format. You can download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader here

Q: I don't know the name of the colour of my car. How can I find it?

A: This is pretty easy to find out - there is a chassis plate under the front bonnet to the left of the spare wheel well. On it there should be a colour code. Note that all the colour codes have three letters. The first letter is the basic colour - C is Red, E Orange, F Yellow, G Gold, H Green, J Blue, L Grey, M Silver, N White and P is Black. The second letter is the mark identifier, and the final letter is the shade or colour name code.

We've included a list of the colours used below along with their paint code.
