1996 MGF for sale - Reduced

Hi all, Unfortunately, due to the need of extra seating and luggage capacity, I have to part with my beloved rolling project. It's a 1996 MGF in BRG with a black interior, imported from Japan in 1999 hence the rare A/C option fitted (but not working) Bought this car in 2015 as a rolling project from...

Monroe or KYB?

I am thinking of replacing the shock absorbers on my MGF, which are still the original ones and after about 70k miles and 20 years of use, they looks a bit tired (front ones are very rusty and scabby). Looking at the stuff available, I would like to know what would be the best, the oil filled Monroe...

Re: vvc rear upper ball joint removal

Aparrt from the 46 socket and a scaffold bar on the beaker bar, apply heat around the area where the ball joint screws in, then immediately squirt some wd 40, then heat again and then use the socket. It did for me on a 20 year old MGF still on original ball joints.

Re: Hydragas issue

Hi, I am new to this forum and have just recently purchased a 1997 MGF. I wonder if anyone knows where I could get the Hydragas suspension pumped up in the North Wales region? The garage in Wrexham that did it has now stopped the service. Thank you! hi, try http://www.hydragas.co.uk as they have co...

Re: how to clean cooling sytem after HGF?

I used the Holts 2 part cleaning fluids. only 6.99 in Halfords and worked a treat as the old under chassis cooling were very rusty.

Phew! That loose pipe was bugging me for ages and couldn't figure out what it was for! The car is so much better to drive now!

Re: Poor start - 1996 MGF 1.8 Mpi

Problem now solved: manifold pressure sensor pipe was disconnected from ecu. After plugging it back in, the problem was gone.

Re: Poor start and now bad idle

I haven't seen any tube connected to the ecu... Only cables! However, I see now a tube from the far right of the manifold, the running along the back of the boot and then ends near the purge canister... It's loose ( put my finger and its sucking air, but doesn't change the running of the engine). Am...

Poor start and now bad idle - sorted!

Hi, yes, it's me again! After looking at everything that was done on my previous post "MGF poor start", it now developed a bad idle. Now the car drives badly... I Have to keep revving at near 2000rpm in gear, otherwise it will shake backwards and forwards like I'm sitting on a raging bull on a Texas...

Re: Brake line leak

Yes, you pointed the cause of the problem in the right direction. Despite the fact they were really poor, like Pliezer's pics above, if I hadn't touched the pipes with the Hydragas sphere, I could have had brake failure in a more insidious way.

Re: Brake line leak

Plezier and Mykel: thanks for your support guys. The job was fiddly, but not hard as you said. The brake hoses and pipe unions were severely corroded, so a bit of heat, pipe cut and wd40 was all I needed. The connections to T piece got the same treatment and the connector itself was in very good sha...

Re: Brake line leak

Thanks very much guys, I feel a bit more confident in doing the job now and your theories about the cause of the leak are very clear now.
I ordered a rear pipe set (two rear + 1 front to back) and I'll give an update when the job is complete.

Re: Brake line leak

Well, that's a good point that I might have disturbed a brake line while doing the suspension... Just not sure how, really. I already bought new brake hoses in order to fit them at some point... But I'm dreading fitting the brake lines! By the look of it, it's a s*** job. Naah, not hydragas fluid......

Re: Brake line leak

Hi Mykel, The handbrake is cable operated, so any leak is definitely from the main system. Get this repaired immediately! As about 3/4 of the brake force is on the front wheels, you will not easily notice one of the rear brakes not working, but it might get worse and you could lose all your brake fl...

Brake line leak

So, the problems keep on coming and I'm seriously cursing MGF's for the last few days. After spending 9 hours replacing the Hydragas units with second hands ones, despite a big improvement with the ride quality, I still can't get to grips to the suspension ride height setting. Therefore, I'll keep t...

Re: Poor start - 1996 MGF 1.8 Mpi

No worries, I managed to fill the day by picking a set of Minilites for the MGF to replace the ropey standard ones, so the car looks much better now. I'll PM you in the meantime
