Re: non starting mg mgf 2000
Fault code readers being sufficiently cheap these days, and the potential time saving in being able to see what the ECU is getting from sensors etc can be huge, perhaps it's time you added one to your toolkit - MEMS3 (the version of ECU in your MY2000 car) monitors and fault logs most of the possibl...

Re: Mgf rear subframe mount dimensions.
I'll be next to a subframe and a tape measure tomorrow, in the meantime the front mounts of the rear subframe are M8 bolts through slightly larger (10mm approx) elongated holes in the mount, rear mounts are M10 bolted through slightly larger holes, 12mm approx.

Re: Rose Jointed TRE's anyone?
I'd definitely share Jerry's caution about the taper on the OE steering arm on each hub - if the kit comes with arms that have the taper removed and an interference fit bolt fastening then you shouldn't lose strength, but simply running a bolt (even if it is a higher grade steel) through a tapered h...

Re: EPAS engine and road speed signal specifications
Most if not all aftermarket ECUs have configurable inputs for road speed & engine speed, so I suspect anyone who has set up for example an Emerald ECU for the MGF would be able to confirm what configuration they set up to correctly interpret the sensor input, and that could well identify at least th...

Re: New boy needs help .... pleeese
The absence of coolant loss while the engine is running, but it weeing out once stopped, is very typical of water pump failure - while running the pump is creating negative pressure below the pump which is stopping the coolant from leaking out, but once it stops the coolant that is above the pump, i...

Re: MGF 2001 EXPLOSION IN INLET MANIFOLD
Well worth a diagnostic to see if there's any evidence of the crank position sensor showing out-of-sync behaviour - I can't see anything but a spark plug being the trigger of the combustion, and if the ECU has mistakenly instructed a spark at the wrong point in the cycle then the CPS would seem the ...

Re: mg tf stalling when cold
Does the misfire occur when you're blipping the throttle in neutral, or is it just when a gear is engaged and the engine is under load? Unusual that an error code isn't being generated, but possible that a sensor has a wiring fault that is breaking the connection momentarily when the cold engine mov...

Re: DAB splitter v. dedicated aerial
Your transmissions gratefully received, thank you :D I remember speaking to another F owner who had concealed a 'T' type aerial inside the trim around the windscreen but was disappointed with the result, so I'm presuming the aerials that are designed to be fitted to glass don't work well if they're ...

Re: Cooling failure
Low load conditions might delay a leak between compression chambers and coolant or oil chambers, but once the gasket has started to fail there's no way of stopping it. It sounds like yours has failed between the coolant circuit and one or more cylinders, presuming there's no indication that coolant ...

Re: poor handling
If you can feel play in the rear track control arms then poly bushing will slightly reduce the effects but you will need to replace the worn joint(s) in the arm before the car will feel stable. If the play is in the arm-to-hub balljoint you have the choice of replacing the whole arm or just the ball...

DAB splitter v. dedicated aerial
Hi all, When installing a DAB head unit to an MGF, two choices exist - fit a splitter to the standard aerial feed to separate the FM & DAB signals, or install a dedicated digital aerial. The efficiency of the standard fitment aerial seems pretty good for FM, and seems equally good whether the mast i...

Re: MG TF Central Locking
Joel, if you've removed the door lock assemblies from the list of possibilities then the next suspect is the 5AS unit. Sadly that's not so easy, the 5AS unit has a coded 'relationship' with the engine ECU so if you fit a replacement 5AS it will need to be 'introduced' to the engine ECU. MG Rover dea...

Re: MOT Advisory
Hmm, courtesy I suspect of the slightly limited VOSA database, points 2 and 3 are a bit ambiguous.. 1. is easy, if it's only an advisory then cleaning off the rust and treating with a corrosion inhibitor, then coating either in wax or grease should save it corroding any further. However, a corroded ...

Re: Engine access query
Removing the offside rear wheel and the closing panel at the back of the arch will give you access, just :D , to the lower mountings of the upper cambelt cover, however the engine mounts do allow a useful amount of vertical movement, so raising the engine a few inches can make reaching the bolts fro...

Re: Speaker wires
Bi-wiring i.e. running two cables on each pole between the speaker and amplifier is a home hi-fi audiophile strategy to ensure maximum purity of signal, but if someone's gone to the trouble of running extra cabling to MGF door speakers their optimism would have to be quite spectacular... If there ar...

Re: full new exhaust???
The two most common failures of the exhaust are the flexi section that runs under the engine (between the manifold and the rear box) and the rear box. The cat can get rattly due to the honeycomb loosening up inside, but generally that doesn't detract from its performance so unless there are rust hol...

Re: MGF brought for Cheap - All advice is welcome
Rust around the rear arches is becoming common, and chances are you'll find more if you go looking. Like all cars, when paint is applied to panels that have a sharp edge, e.g. arches, side vents, crossmembers, sills, the paint goes on thin and will fail before long. Often it takes a few years before...

Re: Wheel hitting arch - help!
If the offside wheel isn't sitting central in the arch then as Rat suggests there is something either bent or broken - the lower wishbone being the most likely I suspect, or if the wishbone looks ok then check the longitudinal subframe member the wishbone bolts to, and compare it to the nearside. It...

Re: Driving abroad - essential tools and spares
In the event of a breakdown, the typical European Assistance extension to breakdown cover will send someone out from the nearest dealership, which does take longer than we're used to in the UK, and if parts need to be ordered they can take a week or more to arrive, even 'little' stuff like an altern...
