Re: Stepspeed problems
The condition of the outside may be deceiving - You need to check that moisture hasn't collected within that socket and its terminals and is causing corrosion and hence problems.

Don't bother with the PAS fluid as it won't help!talkingcars wrote:When were the fluids last changed, no harm in changing them all, including the PAS fluid, and see if that helps.

Re: Mgf 1.8 mpi engine pinking
Are you sure it's pinking? The reason I ask is because the Steptronic/Stepspeed drive plate springs weaken over time and can be heard fluttering at low throttle openings which can sound a bit like pinking. My TF did this and I thought it was pinking initially. Sadly the fix is engine out to get to t...

Re: Water temperature
Typically temperature and fuel gauges are damped to stop wide variations being indicated. They are on my RV8 utilising a small PCB attached to the gauge wiring so I assume other MGR cars are like this too. This is said to be because drivers get scared if they see a rapid change in where the needle i...

Re: has anyone retro-fitted MG-TF rear suspension to MGF ?
... The conversion to TF, driven as it was by poor braking and the unwillingness to lengthen the licencing element from Moulton, kind of cheapened the whole package... I thought it was because Dunlop refused to make them at a reasonable price because they had to remake all the tooling because it wa...

Re: has anyone retro-fitted MG-TF rear suspension to MGF ?
OK but doesn't really make sense to me. A TF is an F but with better suspension IMHO.
But then again I chose a TF over an F because I didn't want to faff about with leaky spheres and all that goes with it.

Re: has anyone retro-fitted MG-TF rear suspension to MGF ?
I have to ask, why keep the hydrolastic suspension? The TF sub-frames are already available complete with your desired suspension geometry so surely that is the way to go. Add VHS Bilstein dampers which are what the designers wanted before the accountants ruined the ride with cheapo dampers and you'...

From photos I have seen online the parking was not on the public highway but on the footpaths! How did they get away with that?

Have you tried pushing it when in gear?
I suggest second gear just as if you were bump starting.

Re: Brake reservoir cap diameter
The F/TF brake reservoir has a bayonet type cap not the usual threaded variety so you need to make up your own special cap.

Re: Pre-tensioner wiring
If it's like my RV8 then it's an ex-Japanese export version and has a warning light operated by the seat belt clip to tell you to 'buckle up'! UK versions don't have this, just the pre-tensioner connections from the SRS. The test fail is because the light is lit. I would have thought that the you co...

Re: Leather seat dye?
The seats in both my TFs (2003 and 2004) were 'half leather'. Make sure what you are trying to dye is actually leather as many MG seats have vinyl side bolsters which is why many seats are worn/torn on the side bolsters. I found years ago on another car that leather can be coloured with both leather...

Re: Stepspeed? What to look out for ??
I owned mine for over 10 years and had no issues. However it did begin the 'death rattle' in the last couple of years before I sold it. Other than being a little noisy at certain throttle openings it didn't seem to affect operation or performance. Mind you I only drove it for 16,000 miles in those 1...

Re: battery drained - how ?
It might be a good idea to check the alternator output too! You need a multi-meter of some sort and you are looking for around 14V at the battery with the engine running. Any lower, except after a good long run when the charge voltage will progressively lower, shows the alternator is not doing a goo...

Re: Timing gear oil leak
No sadly this looks like it's coming from the crankshaft seal. I've had the top cover open and it's dry up the top. When I think about the laws of momentum and the crank floating in it's bearings I wonder if my very zealous cornering has pushed the crank out through the seal as it floats on the thr...

Re: Header Tank Cap Washer
Hi Barrie, I had a whole string of cap failures during the 10 years I ran my TF, presumably down to some poor manufacture or quality control issues. I could never see any defect in them but failure was a regular occurrence. I always ordered 2 when I needed one and I ended up carrying a bag of 4 spar...

Re: raw data for MGF trip computer
So basically, how many pulses you've got per mile depends on how fast you are actually going. No, the pulses per mile will always be the same as it is a simple ratio of wheel circumference and its rotation. It's the speed of the pulses that changes which will be measured and interpreted by the elec...

Re: raw data for MGF trip computer
Thanks for that. I think I can add your info into my conversion ideas. Again for info, I have already changed the RV8 km/h speedo for an electronic version in MPH because this is required for UK use. This is because my RV8 is a Japanese spec car re-imported to the UK as many are. You can get a conve...

Given the last part of the VIN you should be able to find the correct belt and tensioner on a site like Rimmer Bros.
