The Thames Bridges & Tunnels Run: 6th August

Post by Keith Williams » Sun May 15, 2011 7:33 pm

As you may have seen in the summer edition of FTF, on our web site or from Adrian's thread on here, the Register have been working along side the MGCC Anglia Centre on a new event and here it is.

Saturday 6th August
The Register in association with the Anglia Centre proudly announces a brand new and unusual event for 2011.

The Thames Bridges and Tunnels Run.

This event will allow you to see London at night, lit up and at its best.

It takes place on the evening of the 6th August and is open to all members of the MG Car Club plus invited guests.

This is a charity event in aid of Help for Heroes and entry is free.
All we ask is that you make a minimum suggested donation to the charity of £10 per car.

Beginning at Simon's Diner in Wimbledon, the run will criss cross the Thames taking in most of the famous London sights including the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge and more. We'll also be seeing some of the lesser known sights such as St Katharine's Dock, Tobacco Dock and Canary Wharf. We'll finish on the Greenwich Peninsular in the shadow of the O2 Arena with great views back across the river to Canary Wharf. The tour can be extended from this point to include the Dartford crossings.

Simon's Diner at Wimbledon Stadium, Plough Lane, Wimbledon will be open from 7pm and a special menu will be on offer so please arrive hungry, as 10% of the takings will be donated to Help for Heroes.

Donations can be made online via the F Register’s charity page or in person on the night.
Help for Heroes Charity Page
Why not ask your Friends or Family to sponsor you to complete the run? Ask us for a sponsor form if you fancy being sponsored.

Rally plaques are available in advance for £5 each.

As part of the run, you will be entering Canary Wharf which is privately owned & has stringent security checks in place including swabs of the door handle & steering wheel of the car. We are also required to pass your name & car details to them prior to the event. On registration for the event you will have to agree to this security check. If you do not agree to this check, an alternate route, by passing Canary Wharf will be provided.

You can register for this event via the online shop {EVENT NOW CLOSED} or via postal application form. All cars need to be preregistered onto the event to take part.

Cars not pre booked, will not be able to join the run on the night.

I can bring my sat-nav along with me if that helps? Or we can use an old-fashioned paper map and I can navigate off that if you prefer...

...I don't!

Honestly, whatever's easiest for you :thumbsu:

I have a sat-nav - useless piece of crap.
What I need is someone who can follow clear directions, from 'directions' given,
and direct me to turn left or right when I need to signal rather than manoeuvre.
I'm sure you can do that.

(Also to buy me a bacon butty and a pint of tea made with evaporated milk in a chipped
enamel mud with 6 sugars.......if Simon's Diner can provide, that is. The chipped enamel
mug is very important.)

Let me know where you will be. I HATE driving in London, but I'm prepared to do it this time
because life is dull if you don't do something you hate every now and again.

Balance. 8-)

Thank you Ruth, you are a star! I can definitely direct you to turn left or right and of course I shall buy you a bacon butty and a tea! In fact I'll cover your dinner ticket in exchange for the lift if that's okay?

I shall let you know where I will be - not sure myself yet as I've not moved up there nor found a place.

I will have a company car with me by then but feel that you will all greet me with pitchforks should I do the unthinkable of turning up in a (whisper it) BMW MINI.

Thanks again, really appreciate it. And I shall keep you posted as to my whereabouts.

BMW MINI is an oxymoron.

'Nuff said.

Well done on the job, by the way. 8-)

Excellent idea for something different. Two cars from MG Essex & Suffolk now booked :thumbsu: with hopefully more to follow. :thumbsu:
Nearer the time hopefully there might be a list of local Essex MG's run up to the event together :P

I know, which is why you'll note I didn't call it just "Mini", because it's not a real one!

And thank you very much :thumbsu:

Gaz/Ruth, you will all have a comprehensive souvenir roadbook for free (thanks to the Anglia Centre). It will contain everything you need including descriptions of where you are and some of the history of what you will see on the evening.

I've been working on this along with Dave Tynan for months now, it's taking a lot of time because of the complexity of the route (getting it right and perfect is crucial), it's not easy as I'm trying to get the route as good as I can without being stuck in traffic, so some of the places you might think may not be there (like Piccadilly Circus/Oxford Street) we want the run to flow so you all enjoy it.

Sat-nav's will be useful so if you have them, bring them as, when following a road book they actually help with turnings (eg turn left into Horse Guards Parade) you know where it is in advance so switch them on and leave them on map view.

Steve, if you can come our way and meet at the recommended hotel, the Ibis in Lakeside at 17.00 you can help me escort our European friends to the start. I would ask those, who are confident enough, to keep a European car close to them and those who are driving solo must have a guide, you will not be able to do this solo !

Ruth, forget chipped mugs and chip butties, Simon's diner is a loose copy of an American roadside diner but the difference is Simon runs a great place, the food and drink is excellent, I would not recommend it otherwise so please come hungry, the more you all eat and drink, the more money goes to charity :thumbsu:

I think I'll create a Cars of the Day type of thing (I'm sure Simon will judge these for me) so polish them up boys and girls :P .
Bilstein shocks, Piper 4-2-1 manifold, Daytona, Vader cold-air induction, custom Z and F Stage 2 re-map, Electric boot release, braided hoses, Blue Magnecor leads, Technozen relays, Stage 1 head, BMW Angel Eyes headlights, "MG" puddle lights.

Good stuff. 8-)

A bit disappointed about the chipped enamel mug though - :| - it's an icon of road trips for me,
when transport caffs still existed and everything was cooked in beef dripping.

I'm hoping that there will be some people from my neck of the woods who
I can tag along with from outside London and in to the 'collecting ring'.

Come on, SCRR etc. Sign-up please !

I would love to do this run but we will be somewhere near the finish point enjoying a little bit of Iron Maiden at the O2.

Booked and plaque ordered. I've declared the TF which may a bit over straight theoughed for the tunnels  . I did think about using the MGB as that has a stainless straight through as well and would have been a bit of variety, but I'm not sure I will have it back in one piece by then and you have to declare the car when you book. Does anyone know the route book format, the navigator prefers Tulips. Defo bring the satnav as a back up.

It will be standard tulips with a comprehensive write up of where you are and what you will see Stan. I'll speak to all navigators before departure, I advise you all to read the book while you are eating as there won't be much time while driving for commentary, it will be about navigation.

Thanks Adrian, the navigator signed up for it before we knew it was the format she likes, so good news.

Happily received my MGCC Membership Card in the mail this morning, so now that I have that number ... :thumbsu:
... booked the run and ordered the plaque.

Really looking forward to meeting all of you for a great evening and hoping for an enormous fund raising for the good cause.

Michael, if you're staying in the Ibis, we'll meet you there early at 17.00 for the run to the start.

Adrian, thanks a lot, but we will make the TB&TR (ah, those abbreviations  ) the highlight of a holiday week in England and haven't got the faintest idea yet whether this will be the start or the finish. :D

When all's planned and decided on, I will sort out accomodation.
