Brillians hot weather - hot under the collar now too

Post by Keith Williams » Mon Jun 09, 2008 8:48 pm

Great weekend. Was out on the Heritage Run on Sunday from Evesham to Hartlebury Castle near Kidderminster. Great day out for roof down motoring with up to 150 other MG's. We added a good extra display for the Festival of Transport event at the castle.

Got hot under the collar tonight. On Friday, spotted a drop or two of oil beneath the car on the garage floor. Never seen any before. Checked level and was just below minimum. An extra few drops this morning so had good look under car this evening and engine looks quite oily even though couldnt see the position it was actually leaking. Took off engine cover for a better look and one of the top hoses, on just a gentle touch, sprayed water every where. The clip on the hose - none jublilee type - just sheared off. Suppose it was lucky to happen in the garage under my control but I did get more than hot under the collar. Replaced clip and topped up the coolant. Back to checking levels every day again. May have to drop car back into garage to see if they can isolate the oil leak. Have to last to the weekend though for Silverstone :D

These few drops are all that I have seen lost from the car. Only seemed to have dropped to the floor since Friday but engine looks like it has a covering that maybe has taken longer to arrive? Starting to drip form engine on and off since Friday but garage floor only seen it since Friday. Needed about a cup of oil to top back up level (about 3 months since the oil change). Another level I need to check more regularly.

its not a loose oil filter is it ??......or maybe joints in the oil pipes to/from the oil cooler ?

Oil filter was my first thought after the fun I had in removing it at the last oil change but it seems all clean around there and tight enough. The drops (a few more this morning) are coming from that side of the car though unless it is runnning over the engine to get there. Did not realise I had an oil cooler fitted - will have another look but if no joy will book the car in next week for a proper look with the car up off the floor. Considering the engine was cleaned before it was fitted, it looks very grubby and oily now :(

The oil/coolant heat exchanger was only fitted on the TF160. It wasnt fitted on the F VVC or even the MGF Trophy 160.

Cheers lads - at least that is one thing that I dont need to look for then :D

Will book it in next week and hopefully once it is up on the ramps something might show up where it is dripping from.
