Should I re-spray Project Shed

Post by Rob Bell » Wed Mar 05, 2014 4:44 pm

Hi chaps,

No immediate plans to put paint on the car - no cash, and need to buy tyres and a new fire extinguisher! But the question is, should Project Shed stay in its shabby multi-coloured glory, or should I go down the lines of improving its exterior appearances to appear more the MGF Cup Car replica?

Thanks for your thoughts! :D

Indeed a spruce up would be grand and I voted yes as I do not like rat or crappy chic.

In year one concentrate on the performance, in year two worry about paint.

Well I realise that there are plenty of gullible folks about ................................................ after all they pay lots for dreadful looking scruffy furniture labeled "Shabby Chic" even when really decent furniture is wrecked to supply these gullible muppets :thumbsd: . of course the fashion magazines and designers have jumped on the band wagon as it's cheap to do but due to said muppets willing to pay a small fortune for the rubbish there are huge profits in making your home look absolutely dreadful and worn out.

"Blue 33" has dents and the paint is rough from years of tree sap although from a distance when clean it does to look too bad. I shall be having it sorted out bit by bit after all I expect teh car to be presentable and not like something that had just bee dragged from out of a hedge or ditch.

From the poll I realise that I am out of touch with modern fads and as such I look forwards tot eh prices of cars with good body work and paint to plummet so perhaps I can acquire a couple more and save them for the crappy chic brigade :thumbsu:

I suspect a lot of the replies are a bit

" tongue in chic" so to speak ;)

Both my cars are immaculate.

 I don't think I've ever seen a poll so out of step from the opinions in the thread!

Thanks for all your thoughts chaps. The reason for asking is that I remain very much in two minds about this. On the one hand there is nothing better than a well presented racing car. On the other, I rather like the slightly subversive ratty appearance - all the investment so far has been ensuring that the important bits - the suspension, brakes, engine and safety have been taken care of. In fact the suspension is actually really nice and shiny (although probably less so now it has been used, but you know what I mean ;))

For this season, and for next at the minimum, Project Shed is staying exactly as it is :) Beyond that, I am tempted to give it a new set of "clothes".

Stuart, I was going to get the Shed vinyl wrapped - but the quotes I got a year or two ago were far too much for my meager budget :( Somewhere between £1000-2000 IIRC :(
Tony, that plastidip looks much more promising! Hmmm, I like the matt paint effects - very on-trend :) Or gloss white, which racing F's look absolutely terrific in :thumbsu:

Who said coloured cling film?   :thumbsu: Hmm, not sure about Gansta (w)rap either: chrome wheels and spinners, red interior lighting and funny-smelling smoke emanating from the interior? Perhaps not...

Yup, and in that time, I may have removed some more of the old paint on some old dry-stone wall on a hill in Wales!

Thanks chaps! :thumbsu:

Ahhh yes well this is why the body work on "Blue 33" is waiting in the wings so to speak whilst we do the easier and important bits first.

In fact I may look into upgrading the brakes a bit, new discs and better pads, before the dents and paint fix up. The VVC will hopefully get bigger and better brakes plus braided lines and if I can get a heater air box upgrade to snorkel even a servo support bracket.

How about something like this

No more cleaning you just need to mow it once a month :thumbsu:

Ahhh but a nice new smooth paint job will allow The Shed to slip through the air easier :P .

I think your car looks great Rob, it'll cease to be a "shed" if it looks too good. The reason for suggesting a wrap was to preserve the originality under the wrap, but agreed that between 1-2k is probably too much. Just cover the dear thing in gaffa tape- pleanty of colours of that available :D

My F's nothing like the picture, it's a tired old girl. I have spent $2000 this month in preparation for this season, next year get rid of the race tape and repair the dents and paint both sides, well I said that two years or was it three years ago, the same promise. Plastic surgery can wait, the heart needs a pacemaker first.
