Rear Lamp Gaskets XFH100440

Post by Androlyn » Sun Apr 17, 2016 4:49 pm

I have taken my rear lights off today and given them a clean as water has been entering my boot, I have seen that the gasket is ref. XFH100440 which is for the later thicker one I believe.
Just seen them from Rimmer Bros @ either £18.13 (Genuine) or £12.50 (Aftermarket) EACH which is a bit scary.
Any decent sources known that are a bit more reasonable please?
Thank you.

I have some foam backed vynil from the classic Stiletto roof restoration to make such gaskets with a little help from some silicone rubber sealant. You only need the SR sealant.

Come spring clean time, for me it usually helps if I take the old gaskets to the kitchen sink and give them a good wash in hot water with some detergent. They seem to hold a lot of muck inside the foam and once clean and dry also get back their original softness. Never had any issues with water ingress. This will of course only work if they are not torn or split.

I could try cleaning them first but they look like the thin ones and are very compressed, I have read there are two thicknesses?
Noticed plenty of dirt and gunk when I took the light units away from the car, may not have been off in many years/ever so that would not have helped.

I have been told that by swapping the gaskets from one light to the other, which of course means the opposite side of the gasket fits against the light,
extends the life of the gasket.

I have not done this yet but it does seem plausible.

I also brought some Neoprene from eBay with the intention of making my own Gasket. When it turned up it looked really good and would work a treat, but i put it somewhere safe and cant find the bloody stuff now

Its about a meter square and 8mm thick. It came rolled up so I put it somewhere I could keep it flat.

Now our house is not what you would call large, as you know Mykel and Cath has a place for everything and likes everything in its place  , but even she cant find it :o

Ohh just checked and I brought it Oct 2014

If you had a secondhand spare set of these gaskets could you put two gaskets on each side, making them thicker, would that give a better performance?
All cleaned up of course.
Only ask as I have a spare set of rear lights each with an old thin gasket on.....

You can make up the extra thickness with a coating of Silicone rubber sealant on each side of an original gasket. Far better than "Double Old Gaskets" but it may cost you a couple of pennies.

I was thinking of doing that Geoff, just concerned about everything getting stuck down too much.
I have some good sealant that I have used on my boats that I was going to consider using, cannot remember the name of it - and I had the tube in my hand less than an hour ago

Right then, cleaned the gaskets well the other day in the kitchen sink and then left to dry. Also cleaned all around the lights and the body of the car and dried thoroughly.
Fitted today and tested with a watering can....................................they both leaked

Now trying a thin layer of sealant to see what that does

Well, XFH100440 fixed the leaking rear lamps on my car 15 years ago, and all remains well today. Mind you, looks as though the price has gone up a bit (200% inflation??? :-o) since I did mine...
