Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

When I first got my MGF I carried enough tools to do everything up to and including a head gasket change. Of course any problems occurred either in my drive or very close to it so I have gradually been deleting tools from the car. It has now reached a state of reliability where all I carry is a socket set that happens to be a perfect fit in the recess in the boot meant for the optional MGF tool kit.
BTW: If anyone has one of the factory MGF tool kits for sale please let me know (by PM) as I am after one!

I'm not sure I'm bothered about the tools it contains, but if someone (Brad? ;)) were to get a tool case made that fitted perfectly into that recess with an MG logo embossed upon it and could take generic sockets, screw drivers etc, then I would be very interested too! :D

 I'm currently the high bidder on that one. There was an almost perfect one up last week but it went for over a hundred quid.

Personally Rob, I never carry anything expensive in the car in case it gets nicked. I also have an idea of what I would do by the roadside, and I think if we were all honest/practical it wouldn't be a lot, and I tailor tools to that.
My own faves are:
Bottle Jack. -hydraulic but less cumbersome than trolley.
Readily available extendable wheel brace thingy with 17 19mm reversible socket built in.
Spanner with 10 and 13 at each end
Maplins alternator/ battery tester. (Cheap and worth its weight in gold)
Cheap circuit tester, Probe type. (Poundshop)
Decent longer flat blade screwdriver (Water hoses) All mine are jubilee clips.
Reversible screwdriver (Decent one released from a Toyota many years ago)
Clip of 8-17mm 3/8 sockets ratctchet and small extension.
Medium iron head hammer

Not exhaustive but these are my essentials, built up from many years spannering at the roadside in alln times and weathers.
Think the secret is accepting what can't be done alone/without decent gear

Hi Rob,

Based on my 'post instruction' improvement at Donnington, I'd have to say Joe Crook! :D

Great day and good to see you and the Shed there.

My opinion is the same - I wouldn't carry that much in a road car. Frankly if you have to pull over to the hard shoulder on a motorway, then you will not be able to fix your car (you're not even permitted to change a wheel!)

Besides, when it is dark and raining (and inevitably, it will be), I'd be on the phone to the guys with a brightly coloured van , like the rest of them!

BUT track day and competition event tools are something else again. At Donington, I actually took tools with me, including the jack, axle stands, socket set etc etc and still found I didn't have everything I needed  Typical!

Also, I'd rather keep my favourite tools (you all have them, don't deny it!) at home, so having some basic ones as duplicates seems to be a good plan!

I'll start compiling my "track kit" soon :)

Chris, having a driving instructor is a very, very good idea. I would have gone for it too, but was more interested to feel how Project Shed felt and see what broke. :) Had a great day though - and great to see you and the rest of the gang there too! 8-)

I've been a bit slow, but I have now collated the list (I think!)

Tool box
1. Screw driver set
2. Allen keys
3. Pliers
4. Ratchet spanners: 8, 10, 13, 15, 17mm
5. Stanley knife
6. Emery cloth
7. Metal file
8. Junior hack saw
9. Electrical tape; self-vulcanising repair tape; Gaffer tape
10. Hydraulic “bottle jack”
Tool box spares:
1. Alternator belt
2. Expansion tank cap
3. Radiator bleed screw
4. Selection jubilee clips
5. Cable ties

Extra, non-tool box tools:
1. Axle stands (pair)
2. Socket set
3. Torque wrench

Will see whether I've missed anything over the next 12 months of track events :)

Late bid for a pair of water pump pliers and a multimeter. I always take box spanners when touring as they occupy very little space/weight. All the rest of my 'essentials' have been mentioned at least once!

Mike H wrote:You mentioned an alternator belt in your list of 'tools' Rob. On that basis I'd also specifically include a spare expansion bottle cap and radiator bleed screw, along with a couple of jubilee clips towards each end of the size spectrum!

If you're contemplating any wheel swaps a torque wrench might be useful, and latex gloves are always useful along with rag and/or paper roll.....

I have a friend with a B who always, but always takes a trolley jack and club hammer on any significant journey or event. I'm not aware that he's ever needed either for himself but he's certainly loaned the trolley jack to others on more than one occasion
Sorry to resurrect this thread, but just to say that I actually needed to use my spare radiator bleed screw today.....

Not for me, but for a fellow F-er when a few drops of water appeared under the front of his car on a Cotswold run we were on. The bleed screw had totally sheared across the shank by the collar, for no apparrent reason.

My good deed for the day, but you never know what you (or others) might need, and when :)

You have most things covered but a small gas soldering iron, solder and a little heat shrink might be Handy

That's a good idea - and I think I have a small pen-sized gas torch somewhere... :)
