Does the fuel cap come apart easily?
My silvery ring is a bit of a mess and was going to try and tidy it up or maybe replace it but I want to keep the same lock/key ideally.
Can you get the rings without the middle bits?

in a word yes
First remove the Allen key thingy's. These are not threaded, you need to kind of tilt the Allen key so when you twist you can pull at the same time, if you get what i mean. With them out you should be able yo remove the black plastic ring behind the matel face. if its a bit stiff pry it gently with a small flat bladed screwdriver (make a note of where the arrow is on the ring). The plastic middle (with the key hole) is clipped into the metal outer. Its worth marking the position of the plastic middle and the metal ring as they only fit together in one position.
When i did the one on Cath's F a couple of the metal clips that hold the Allen Key bolt thingy's where rusted almost away, when i put it back together i bunged some Blue Tac in the hole to hold the bolt, its been fine for 3 years now .

When you re-fit the cap onto the car you should see a couple of screws , one each side of the filler pipe. If you loosen these a touch you can center the cap in the hole. Then take the cap off and re-tighten

No problem, its been about 3 years since i did the ring on Cath's F. I spent a bit of time trying to unscrew the Allen key bolts and as usual though they where like every other bolt on a F/TF ............KNACKERED . They are held in place with small thin metal clips that tend to rust or snap, but as i said Blue Tac will hold them or you can get a knackered cap from a breakers to take apart and try to salvage some clips from.

Exactly as you describe Gary - the allen head things look more like rivets, with a smooth shaft that go into spring clips. As you say, tilting the allen key and pulling is usually sufficient to remove them.
