Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Easy question..

Post by DanieleT » Sat Aug 13, 2016 8:36 am

Where should the water temp gauge needle sit?

Once the engine is warm..is it...

Middle of the gauge?

Or

Just one mark up the gauge?

Thanks in advance.

One mark below the middle is usually the norm.

Thanks..I thought so but mine always sat at middle.
The dealer now repairing the car has said that the temp seems low after replacing the head gasket but I wondered if he was expecting the same.

It seems not an easy answer...there are different gauges I think.

The gauge on my tf has just one notch between middle and bottom. Similarly one notch between middle and max.

Should the temp be just below middle or only climb a quarter way up the gauge?

Hi, generally it would only be half way to half if the thermostat is missing or faulty. On both my F's it sits just a faction under the half way.

Thanks nick, same on my rover coupe turbo.
Just a few mm below the middle of the gauge.

I think everyone assumes that all the gauges on the mgf and TF are the same.
It seems apparent that they aren't.

On all the F and TF's I have owned ( 6 ) the water temp gauge sits just below the half way mark on both road and high speed track days.

The oil temp has always shown higher on the TF.

Many thanks. The responses have helped make it crystal clear.
Sorry if the initial question seemed silly.

No such thing as a silly question if you don't know the answer

I guess so, thank you...on a plus note it means that the car is in need of further inspection. The dealer did say that he would change the thermostat as it was reading low.
With this all cleared up I can be certain where it should be when up to temp.
