How to secureley fit Goodridge Braided Brake Hoses
Hi All,
Can anyone advise on the best way to fit and secure Goodridge Brake Hoses on the Front of my MGF please??
In my mammoth task in getting my MGF back on the road this year, I have gone for a nice set of Goodridge hoses all round. the rears were nice and easy, but now I've come to the fronts, I am concerned........
They don't have the mid-line fixing point that goes on the lower shock bolt like the OE hoses. They do come with P-Clips, but they are the type of size to go on the same fixing point.
They are a long line and I need to ensure that they are secured without kinks, and that they do not foul with the wheels, or suspension.
I have spoke directly to Goodridge who couldn't help or advise at all as they do not have any drawings or spec lists on the correct fitment.
Any idea's please chaps & chapess's
Dave.

A number of years ago, I made the same mistake and bought a set of these. To fit them is more trouble than any advantage that they may have. The old OEM ones had been good for 12 years. The Goodridge are still in the garage. The replacement OEM will last few more years.

Re: How to secureley fit Goodridge Braided Brake Hoses
Thanks Geoff.................. I think! LOL
I'm hoping they are going to be worth the effort. I bought them over a year ago, and have fitted the rears, so there's no turning back now!
Obviously, if I had to resort to new OE on the front, I'll have to do the same for the rears as it's a big No-No to mix them.
Fingers crossed the answer is here somewhere.

I cut the fixing out of the O/E hose and used cable ties to hold them in place, them are fine after several years but do look a little Heath Robinson.hilly wrote:They don't have the mid-line fixing point that goes on the lower shock bolt like the OE hoses. I did exactly the same - works fine. Jack the suspension up and down and full lock the steering to check for fouling.talkingcars wrote:I cut the fixing out of the O/E hose and used cable ties to hold them in place, them are fine after several years but do look a little Heath Robinson.hilly wrote:They don't have the mid-line fixing point that goes on the lower shock bolt like the OE hoses. Re: How to secureley fit Goodridge Braided Brake Hoses
Chees guys.
Yes, I'd pondered that too, and it was something I said I'd considered when talking to the guys at Goodridge about it.
I'll give it a go.
When I looked at it last weekend, I wondered if I could un-braise the clamp part from the solid section of the OE hose.
I do however thing that it should be done in such a way to that the new hose doesn't slit through the fixing to create more or lass slack either side that would allow it to interfere with the wheel, suspension, or bodywork.
Sounds a plan, I'll let you know how I get on.

Re: How to secureley fit Goodridge Braided Brake Hoses
On the subject of not mixing OE with Braided...................
Why?..............
Goodridge advise against it for a start, but in essence, as they are capable of working under different pressures, it could act like a brake balance situation if you had to brake hard I guess.............. any give in the pipes means less braking force at the calliper, a bit like say an F1 car adjusting brake balance between front and rear. Although I think it would be more a theoretical situation than actual, if you know what I mean

Am I missing something? Can't you just buy some p-clips the right size?

Re: How to secureley fit Goodridge Braided Brake Hoses
Yes, I probably could!
I think though, the issue with P-Clips alone would be that to get a P-Clip with the correct larger size hole to fit on the lower shock bolt, would then make it too large to securely hold the pipe without some packing.
Plus, it's always interesting seeing all the different ways we all get over these issues

I think you can get p-clips in various combinations of bolt-hole size and pipe-holding diameter.

Re: How to secureley fit Goodridge Braided Brake Hoses
Yes, you are correct, but from the ones I've searched, the problem is getting a P-Clip with the combination of a small grip size (braided hose) but with a large (10mm) fixing hole.................BodgeItAndScarper wrote:I think you can get p-clips in various combinations of bolt-hole size and pipe-holding diameter.
The hunt continues...... as you say, there must be one somewhere LOL

Nice one............ although, I think it means they are 10mm wide, 20mm around (or long if you flattened it) and a 6 mm bolt hole?? And I guess the refer to 6mm as the hole through that it grips.......
Cheers though, it may well be worth a stab.

Re: How to secureley fit Goodridge Braided Brake Hoses
I guess what would solve this in a tidy way is to just make up a flat piece of steel with 2 holes...... 6mm for the P-Clip and 100mm to fix to the bottom shock bolt....... round the ends, paint it satin black... job done??

M10 is the bolt diameter. The clip is 20mm wide, and the grippy bit is 6mm.hilly wrote:Nice one............ although, I think it means they are 10mm wide, 20mm around (or long if you flattened it) and a 6 mm bolt hole?? And I guess the refer to 6mm as the hole through that it grips.......
I'm starting to think it might be worth knocking up a couple of clips yourself out of some thin steel strip. Hammer it round a form of some kind, maybe an allen key or non-tapered bolt the right size, then drill a hole and trim the ends if needed.

Re: How to secureley fit Goodridge Braided Brake Hoses
I'm inclined to agree..... a simple strip, with a step in it to keep the pipe away from the top arm, bolted to the shock mount at one end, and bolted to the supplied P-clip the other

Re: How to secureley fit Goodridge Braided Brake Hoses
Well guys,
Firstly, thanks for all your note, ideas, and opinions on this!
I'm glad to say that I've done it!!
I have to make my final checks once the car is back on its wheels to be 100% sure my new bracket will miss the bump stop, but at this time, I'm really rather chuffed at the results!
How can I post pictures on this thread so I can share my work and get your thoughts??
