Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Which spray paint to use?

Post by hammond » Wed May 09, 2018 6:01 pm

I'm just about to venture into spraying some side scoops I have for my F but just after some advice. I'm going to spray them black.

What's the best make of spray paint to use?
They are bare material so shall I undercoat them first?
And after top coats is there need for like a top clear finishing coat to protect the paint?

Any advice or links to best paint to use most welcome :thumbsu:

If they are plastic side scoops, then you need to use a plastic primer. Nowadays you can do the job with aerosols quite easily, Halfords sell the plastic primer, colour and clear coats. Modern paints used by the refinish and repair trade use a water-based paint for the colour coat and a clear coat is needed on top of this. Some aerosol colour coats are intended to take a clear coat on top, and thus do not shine once dry, the shine is supplied by the clear coat.

Only some Halfords mix aerosols, an alternative is your local motor paint supplies or there is a place in Hove that does mail order.

Thanks for the tips guys. They're moulded sort of material so guess they must be plastic, certainly not metal :thumbsu:
