Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Sun visor - MG TF

Post by Fraser » Sat Dec 03, 2022 12:55 pm

Wouldn't it be nice if some kind MG aftermarket supplier could just reproduce the flap on this device ! Maybe the MGOC spares operation could do so. Like the left side a few years ago, the right (driver) side flap broke its securing tang the other week on my 2009 TF. They always break on the hinge tang where the spring is located, clearly because of the constant stress of the spring. I suppose I'll just have to bite the bullet and buy the whole shebang, hopefully a good used one, but before I fit it, I'll remove the spring ! These things are about £84 new from Rimmers.

Think there was something on the mg-rover forum about fitting Audi TT sun visors together with the Audi clips. I’m tempted and looking for good used ones on eBay!

The BMW Z3 visor is a good fit.

I did mean to add this, these enable easy fitting of BMW Z3 sunvisors.

I fitted Z3 visors by modifying the mounts, I slotted the mounting holes and used the Z3 bolts as the MG ones are countersunk and would have opened the slots. I then carved out space with a soldering iron (no Dremel) for the bolt heads in the Z3 mount cover, I filled the existing holes and sprayed the mount in Satin Black, the Z3 mount has a stepped bit in the pressing and I put a speed clip on this and drilled a hole in the cover and used a self-tapper to secure the cover.

3D print a replacement MGF/TF sun visor?

Z3 visors don't look bad. Not seen pictures of the Audi variant though? Any pictures available for this option?

The 3D prints are new mounts to make the Z3 visors easier to fit, they were being sold on Ebay until recently but have now disappeared!

Very enterprising of someone :) Shame they've disappeared. Would be good to share the files so others can make them?

What I was thinking was to re-make the MGF/TF original visors as a 3D print. Not sure that PLA would be strong enough? Colour match might be an issue too, unless one plans to use a leather, alcantara or fabric cover. :)

The file to print the Z3 adaptors is available at https://www.printables.com/model/227340 ... -sunvisors
I looked at these before I modded my own, I couldn't figure out how they fitted as there are no pictures or instructions, to me they appeared to use only one bolt or does the other one go into
DSCF1020.JPG
download/file.php?mode=view&id=16923 the existing mount. My mod to the Z3 mount is pictured, if you put the back of your head on the dash and look up you might spot the mount does not fully fill the mounting recess but to date no one has done this.

I’ve fitted the visors from the Alfa GTV, have reversed the fitting i.e. offside fitted on near side. Hole centres are the same as the MG. Prices can be quite high but got mine on eBay from a breakers yard.

Both the visors in my Alfa 159 have vanity mirrors with flip up covers, when you open the cover on the drivers side a light comes on, open the passanger side and it doesn't - LOL
