Dumb Blonde, have you given up on the idea of trying to get it fixed by someone who actually knows what they're doing? If you try to sell it as it is you'll be lucky to get much more than scrap value. MGF values are not high right now for 'good' cars, so with a faulty Steptronic box, I think you might struggle. The recovery company that collected my MGF was called PMVS. A nice guy called Peter Morris arrived with a puka recovery truck and it was all sorted in no time. The number is 01254 389164 or 07778 208009. Maybe you could get a deal if he's heading south for a collection one day and he's running unloaded on the outward journey? Hope this helps, Phil

ive read elsewhere that this fluid is recommended by comma for the mg cvt box.

has anyone used this?

Steptronic is a BMW patented name so when they sold out it was renamed Stepspeed. The only difference.
MGR Spec oil is readily available so why bother with alternatives ???
Sell it on the Board Classified or E-Bay as undriveable for £400 or 500.
Someone will buy it, take 10 minutes to fix it, drive away and put it back on for £1500 to 2K.
It is almost certainly electrical so it is a cable, connector, sensor or black box. You may have someone clean the connectors and source sensors and a black box to swop out. I may talk to our local dismantler.

oh? i understood the exact opposite--it being available solely through BMW dealers at eye watering prices.
i havent checked them out though.

any advice as to where i can get it? i understand the comma product is around £60 for 5x1 litres.

I'm only going on information given to me by a specialist who's probably forgotten more about MGR cars than most people on this forum will ever know. He also fixed the annoying metallic rattling noise that happens on tickover on many Stepspeed boxes - my wifes included, primarily because he'd taken the time and trouble to research modifications developed by these other manufacturers that could be applied to the MGR box. The stuff that we put into the ZR was the expensive OE spec oil, but hey, the price looks really cheap compared to the cost of a gearbox failure which I'm told could occur if you use the wrong oil,

to answer some questions:

CVT Fluid - readily available from X-part, Rimmer Brothers, Brown and Gammons, MGOC (sshh)

Gearbox rebuild - an eye watering £2000, i know I have been there. I know have my gearbox serviced annually by the specialist who rebuilt it. This will hopefully prevent the warranty company wriggling out of the bill should it need doing again.

Use of MGR gearbox by others - Mini and Ford have both used the innards of the CVT in their own gearboxes. Not sure if the casing is the same.

Problem with gearbox - agree with Geoff. Most likely an electrical problem. Little black box under gearstick or a cable or sensor. Easy fix and should show up on a diagnostic check. Unkikely to be a problem with the the innards of the gearbox - despite my own problems which were due to a previous owner either having the vehicle towed incorrectly or running the vehicle with no fluid in the gearbox.

The unipart is EZL799.
Electrical problem tops, had the very same prob myself 2 yeas ago, multiplug had slipped a pin.

Hi guys, would this black box pick up on the t4 diagnostics??? As you all know its had this done and nothing was picked up!!! It has the right oil in when the gearbox was newly replaced I had a bill for the ESso oil. And the latest mg garage checked this... The sensors have been checked and cleaned on various occasions by my dad And the mg garage...I agree it's something as simple as this.. And yes the sensible option is to get it down to nick and jean.. But further expense yet again... I wish someone had a magic wand... I look at it sat on the drive and yesterday it did move again... Thanks guys for your input...

If it's not electrical then how about the 'mechanical' shift cable that runs from the gear lever back to the gearbox?

Maybe this is badly fitted or needs adjustment?

(Sorry if I missed anything on this on all that's gone before!)

A real shame you couldn't resolve the problem. I was reading with great interest as I've just got a 'Steppy' which is a little cluncky gearbox wise but fine most of the time !

Hi, purchased a red mr2.. Hope your steppy doesn't have the same problem am sure it will be fine..

I feel your pain, my steppy suffered two gearbox failures in the 3 years I owned it. I let it go for a fraction of what it cost me, hope your MR2 is all you hope for.
