Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.
Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.
Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway!

Camshaft holding tool
Started refitting the refurbished head to the F yesterday but once fitted realised I needed to remove the rear camshaft gears to fit the belt on. The workshop manual uses camshaft holding tool 12-182. After seeing the price of these at Rimmers, I either need an alternate method or alternate tool unless someone has one I can loan for a short time.
There are some universal tools on e-bay but not sure if they are suitable or not. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately I've not worked on a VVC head Keith, so can't say from personal experience - but wonder whether you can use the same tool as used for the main cam at the front of the engine? Much cheaper from Draper/on-line

Cheaper would be that bit of old angle iron or Dexion lying in the corner of the shed plus a couple of long bolts...

Cheers for the response guys.
For the amount of time the tool is needed, I definately do not want to spend too much. Will have a hunt around work to see if I can knock something up once I get Cholmondeley and MG Live out of the way.

Hi Keith
I have a draper camshaft holding tool (for ford zetec, shh don't tell anybody) similar to the ones in your first post. If you want to borrow it i will bring it along to MG Live for you. It works on the front camshaft pulleys but don't know about the vvc unit as i havn't worked on those.

Once the belts are back on, it should be a reasonably quick job to sort the remainder out and then I only have the issue of actually starting the car again and trying to get it through the MOT
