Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

getting the ABS to activate

Post by RobboMC » Fri Oct 10, 2014 3:00 am

I am testing the brakes on our car that's not been driven for 3 years.
The brakes work fine and the car stops nicely, but on a dry road I can't get the ABS to kick-in, not even a little bit.

Is this normal or do I have a problem?

Still has the old brake fluid but that will be replaced before MoT check.

I would Have thought you should be able to get the wheels to lock up on a dry road. (abs kick in) A clean and check of the calipers may be in order whilst your changing the fluid

I would have thought that with all the leaf mulch around at the moment it would be very easy to find a safe place to easily check if the ABS was working? ;)

Either a wet road, especially smooth concrete or a gravel/dirt track would be better.

Fresh brake fluid will help as in an ideal world it should be changed every couple of years.
Also worth fitting new brake hoses, ideally braided but standard ones will be an improvement.
