Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

MGF Snorkel upgrade

Post by Androlyn » Sat Apr 16, 2016 10:38 am

Is the Snorkel upgrade a straight forward job to do, is there a link to how to do it please?
My current set up is rusty when looked at from the outside and I think when parked at a certain angle I get a dribble into the footwell when it rains hard.
I think I have read that the Snorkel upgrade is a worthwhile thing to do.
Also are they only available as a secondhand part?
Thank you, Andrew.

I've never done it Andrew but I believe it's a straightforward swop, I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong.

If you haven't got a breakers near you, call Martin Smith on 07722 175473 and I'm sure he'll send you one www.usedmgtfspares.co.uk

Hi Andrew,
yes, the upgrade is very worthwhile, have done it on my Wedgie last year. The biggest problem is getting the big box out, I had to cut it to remove it. But as it’s a good riddance, I didn’t really bother.

When fitting the snorkel, forget about the original foam gasket it comes with, this will be leaking over time. On both my cars (the F and the TF that came with a leaking snorkel), I applied black mastic the roofers use to stop leaks, it’s called “Dachdicht” in German, bet there is something similar available in the UK as well. I totally agree Mykel :thumbsu:

If i remember correctly a couple of the bolts on the box are easy to get to but the rest are a real pain. If your going to change it then just cut the thing out ...............your going to replace it anyway :D The Snorkel type fits in without any fuss :D

Their are a few on eBay (mgf snorkel) :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

A bit of an update, I have managed to undo all four bolts, the last was like a Chinese puzzle and I needed various extensions etc from my socket set :D Got at it from the wheel arch so good job I haven't yet refitted my splash guard thingy.

Now the big black box is loose I am trying to fathom how to physically remove it as things are in the way, I don't really want to play with the clutch or brake cylinders that I think are the main culprits.

Any suggestions please, or is it a case of cutting the plastic somehow as I will be disposing of it?

Thank you :thumbsu:

I forgot to say the Snorkels seem to have five holes in them while the box I took out has four, do four line up OK and ignore the 5th?

Actually there are six of them, Andrew, these are the same mountings as for the pedal assembly. In fact this is where the assembly is bolted on on LHD cars. The top ones have welded threads, the bottom ones need bolts and nuts, iirc, with the bottom middle one being the most awkward. Use all of them to keep the thing well sealed, leave one out and you’ll probably regret it.

OK I have only seen pictures on eBay etc and could see five, six makes sense and as you say will help hold everything in place.
Just tried cutting the old plastic box off with a Stanley Knife without any joy - broke a blade. Might need to charge up my Dremel although I don't like the idea of hot plastic flying around.
How would someone get the box out if needing to put back after, remove the clutch pipe and or cylinder?

Yep

Much easier to charge the Dremel :D

Did you know you can get larger cutting wheels for the Dremel

Dremel had been charging and new plastic cutting discs purchased, pleased to report that I now have the dreaded black box cut out :D
Just waiting for my Snorkel to be delivered then I can get that fitted :thumbsu:
Will probably not used the foam gasket and just seal up with some flexible window type sealant :sf:

Managed to get the old box out of my TF in one go, couldn't be bothered to cut it up. Being a warm day helped as the plastic deformed slightly.

I've tried un-bolting mine, but thanks to corrosion and cheap fixings, the captive nuts are no longer captive, but running wild, turning with the screws!

Will have to cut my airbox out too sadly

Snorkel is now sealed up and bolted in, just waiting for it to fully dry off.
Then in a couple of days I will get the hose out and test it :P

It might be worth taking off the pipe that goes to the heater fan in the passenger foot well when you put the hose on. Just to check that nothing is coming in through the pipework

You are right, I have not put anything back yet, "just in case".
So the pipe, glovebox, carpets etc are all still out.... :thumbsu:
