Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

MGF SUSPENSION.

Post by MG maniac » Thu Dec 10, 2015 9:56 am

Hi all. Has anybody carried out a coil spring conversion on there MGF, if so, is it a worthwhile conversion. I have a friend in Australia who cannot get his hydragas pumped up so he's looking at alternatives. Thanks in advance for any responses. David.

For the Suplex system it might be worth talking to Dave Hughes from Liverpool (yo55er on this forum), he's had his car converted some time ago. But as your friend is in Oz, the local alternative may be a bit more reasonable. It was developed by MG Centre of Sydney, 26 Cowper St, Granville NSW 2142, some information can be found here.

EDIT: Just found a how-to on the t-bar.

Hi Mykel. I think I've found him a garage in Victoria that can pump up his suspension, so hopefully he won't need all the agro. A coil kit was £760 sent to Oz, plus 10-10hrs of labour time to fit it.

He should be able to get a DIY pump off eBay and pump it up himself. I had no MG experience when I started and I was able to rescue a car from 300 mm ( spec is 358 mm min ) guard height just with a DIY pump. Cost me about A$110 for the pump and got some proper fluid from a local Mini supplier, or mix your own with some high quality coolant concentrate.

Sadly I'm 900 km away so it's a bit far to bring it over.

From what I have read the Australian version of the spring conversion kit is far far better than the UK version.

I have done about 1500 miles on Suplex fitted to our MGF Trophy and the suspension and handling is very good. The only very small niggle is a little noise, which I think is coming from the units themselves, when a bad pothole is encountered. On the open road, the system handles the ups and downs with no noise at all. Certainly much much better than a 'shot' Hydragas system!

There's a chap in New Zealand who has worked out how to re-charge and recondition Hydragas units - might be worth a quick websearch... depends on the problem your friend has David?
